Art of freeing yourself by letting it go

Letting it go is one of the most basic principles in spirituality. Let go, or detachment indeed is a powerful concept, but what does it mean? Does it mean breaking all the relationships and staying aloof somewhere? Does it mean complete inactivity? Does it mean staying alive without giving any response? In this blog, we discuss what it truly means by letting it go and how we can practice this in life.

Meaning:

First, we need to understand that let go does not mean being detached, unresponsive, unapproachable, or forbidding. When you do that, you entirely get disconnected from your feelings and life itself. Instead, letting it go means deep live involvement, performing your duties, being detached from the outcome.

Our mind generates thousands of different thoughts every day, and most of them are useless. The act of letting it go is setting yourself free from meaningless, unpleasant, dark, and harmful thoughts that come to your mind. Your thoughts do not represent your true nature, and hence, this letting it process makes you free from the emotional burden of being guilty of your thoughts.

It is a process of not obsessing over negativity, mal thoughts, and unhappy feelings.

What happens when you don’t let it go?

Beliefs, past relationships, addictions, grudges, possession. We all are afraid of letting it go. Anger, envy, pride, resentments anchor you to the ground, preventing you from flowing along with life.

Over involvement in past relationships, hurtful people, or in the memories of people who are not there anymore in your lives take too much of your time and energy. And you lose a lot by holding on to them.

The ego is a bi-product of isolation, fear, beliefs, and bad habits. It shuns us, limiting our day-to-day activities, habits, likes, and dislikes, not allowing our awareness to go higher.

Recently research found out, apart from a heavy emotional toll, holding on to the grudge can cause actual physical pain. If there is acute pain in your lower back or suffering from arthritis at a young age, the reason might be the resentments and grudges you are holding on to.

Every minute you spend in the past is the minute you miss in the present. Past experiences help you to improve. But, apart from the learnings, there is no real value to the past. Dwelling on the past can result in stress, anxiety, depression, and even obesity. So, not only for spiritual progress but also for sound physical and mental health, it’s vital to let go of that emotional baggage.

5 point program to let it go:

Positivity: with the help of meditation, when you realize that you often end up with dark thoughts in your mind, you can consciously divert your thoughts by altering the thinking process. Looking at things from a positive perspective comes with practice. But when you start doing it, the negative thoughts lose their grip on you. By practicing mindfulness, you actually can reject the negative thoughts from your mind, inviting positivity.

Making peace with your past: Grudges, disgust, rage, melancholy, annoyance are useless emotions. When you stick to them, it harms you physically and mentally. It’s tough to get rid of them, but indeed it’s a painful procedure everyone must carry out within themselves. When you let these negative emotions go, you stop allowing yourself to indulge in them.

When you let it go, you consciously decide not to dwell on it. When you move on after accepting the past, you admit your mistakes and failures to move forward, being wise from the experiences., focusing on the bright future.

Going easy on yourself: Everyone experiences negative emotions every day. Please don’t beat yourself up for it. Most of the people go on living their lives without even noticing them. Instead, congratulate yourself that you were aware enough to realize your negative thoughts from the third perspective. Acceptance is the first step for solving a problem, and by recognizing your thoughts, you already have taken the first step towards it.

Uncertainty: When you learn to let it go, you realize the things in your control and the things that are well beyond your control. People seeking security in the external world keep on pursuing it for the rest of their life. The seekers who accept the chaos outside make their peace with it. In a real sense, when you embrace that uncertainty, you open up unlimited dimensions of possibilities in life. So, accepting the uncertainty is one of the most crucial steps in letting it go.

Meditation: When things don’t work out our way, our mind is conditioned to desire and be unhappy. Meditation is an effective practice to take a step back and observe what’s going on in your subconscious.

Meditation brings your attention to now. When you close your eyes and concentrate on the movement of breath, it makes you aware of your thoughts and feelings. We often don’t see the things they were by adding our previous experiences and emotions into the observation.

Meditation detaches you from adding your colors to the picture that you recall from your past life. This process makes it easier to accept that incident, feeling, or pain for as it is and let it go.

To let it go, you need to develop self-esteem and inner strength. When you choose to let go the past events, not to be obsessed with failures, keeping emotional detachment from them, you move one step closer to happiness. A happy mind is a fertile mind for spirituality. When you let go of that emotional baggage, you feel free, light, and full of possibilities.
