How to get Motivated when Depressed?
It’s said that every leaf from the tree is different, and so is every snowflake. Same as that, everyone has their coping mechanism when it comes to depression. Most often, depression does not necessarily mean sadness.
It could be numbness of emotions, lack of desire to do anything, absence of anything that brings joy and cheer in life. Depression could mean you lack the passion that needs to be fulfilled, no urge to prove anything to yourself, or lack of overall self-motivation. In this blog, we explain how we can overcome depression and get motivated with the help of spirituality.
Things that can make that frown upside down and will motivate you:
1. Get ready: We often tend to ignore hygiene when we are going through a depression. Water cleanses us, helps to get rid of that negative energy around us. Being under the shower helps to wash away your depressing thoughts and open up to new possibilities. When the water runs down from your head to toe, imagine all the pessimism, cynicism, hopelessness, and gloominess is being washed away. You will feel motivated when you step out of the shower.
2. Clothes: Even if you will be working from home, try to dress in your favorite clothes. It might sound weird, but clothes will make you feel important. Bright colors are associated with different Chakras. For example, root Chakra is associated with the color red, while heart Chakra is related to the color green. When you wear these colors, it helps to activate your Chakras, making you feel motivated from within.
3. Mindfulness Walking: Going outdoors helps to change the perspective. It makes our problems smaller compared to the vast universe out there. While concentrating on your breath, your body moment, and how your body feels, the scenario changes when you cross your front gate. Take a look at the Sun, the moon, ground, trees, birds, and as you breathe, the fresh air provokes the happy hormones like endorphins within you, stimulating you.
4. Creative Outlet: Depressed, anxious, and neurotic people happen to be some of the greatest artists that ever lived on this planet. Creativity gave them much-needed relief from depression and extreme mood swings. Let it be writing, painting, gardening, or cooking, choose something that will get you moving and keep you busy, where you won’t have to think about your problems so much.
5. Journaling: Write down your feelings. Write down five things that you are proud of. Write down your daily accomplishments. Write down the things you are grateful for. More you show gratitude in life; life will give you more things you will be grateful for. Writing your goals in the journal is an excellent way of achieving them. Writing a daily journal will make you open-minded, honest, and sincere. It will encourage you to ask questions about yourself, which will result in a deeper understanding of the self.
6. Self-Acceptance: Self-acceptance is the best motivator out there. When going through a rough patch, it’s normal to be overly critical and hard on yourself. But in those difficult moments, it becomes crucial to accept what’s happening to us and who we are. Once you have accepted your limitations and capabilities, it becomes easy to pick yourself up, dust yourself, and start walking again.
How spirituality helps in overcoming depression?
-Spirituality makes us realize that we are a crucial part of the plan, much bigger than ourselves.’ The reality is much larger than ourselves is the crucial part of any spiritual practice, and when we offer ourselves to the powers of the universe, it makes us feel like contributors to the grand design. This makes us get up every morning with great enthusiasm and give our best efforts towards the world.
-Your physician might diagnose you with depression, but your mind and soul is as much as depressed as you allow them to be. When you deepen your relations with yourself, external stimuli impact less harshly than usual. When you know yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally, you know exactly what you need to get out of the dark place and motivate yourself.
-Finding purpose through spirituality helps you to get a bird’s eye view of your life. When you surrender to the Divine, all the efforts you made, all the pains you endure never go to vain. Every step you have taken, you are taking, and you will be taking helps you balance your mind, body, and soul, making you immune to the negativities around you.
-Even during the depression, when the seeker starts questioning the spiritual methods, struggling intellectually with their faith, the symbols, rituals, and traditions in spirituality help a seeker carry on through their worst moments.
-Spiritual activities, like Meditation, praying, Puja rituals, and Mantra chanting help people to a great extent. These activities are known to improve mental health. They provide a great coping mechanism during psychological and physical stress. A few minutes of daily Meditation improves mood, well-being, focus, attention, and tolerance to stress.
Chakra Meditation for depression:
Sacral Chakra is the energy center located below the Naval. This Chakra is known to govern sex organs and kidneys. Also known as Swadhishthana Chakra, Sacral Chakra is often associated with the energy of water, and its portrayed with bright orange color. It’s the home to the energy of emotions, creativity, and sexuality. Depression is the sign of Imbalance in this Chakra.
One can use orange-colored stones and crystals to balance the Chakras. Taking a soothing bath with essential oils can remove the Chakra blockage. Yoga Asana postures like a goddess, baby, or Malasana can help recalibrate the Sacral Chakra. By tapping into creativity, doing painting, writing, singing, or gardening will help balance it.
‘Vam Namah’
Beej Mantra’ Vam Namah’ brings balance in the Sacral Chakra, and by harnessing its power, one can create emotional stability, reducing depression. Next time, when you sit for the Meditation, chant this powerful Beej (Seed) Mantra. It will remove the blockage from your Swadhishthana Chakra and will aid you in fighting the depression.
