The power of spiritual momentum

The ability to keep increasing or developing; the force that makes something move faster and faster is momentum. But what does this law of physics have to do with spirituality? Every day, all of us experience this shift of momentum. May it be a sudden increase in the train’s speed or a discussion suddenly turning into an argument. It could be felt during relationships, achievements, or even during practising spirituality.

There is both positive and negative spiritual momentum. Many who take on the spiritual path drift away for some reason, and this phenomenon is called negative spiritual momentum. Many feel a sudden boost in their spiritual journey and experience positive spiritual momentum.

Why do we feel negative spiritual momentum?

 Often, we get busy in day-to-day life. In pursuit of achieving worldly things, we tend to forget about the spiritual world, which drifts us apart from spirituality. Neglecting meditation, mantra chanting, or reading the scriptures could seize the spiritual momentum.

Meditation and chanting are vital to every spiritual practitioner. It’s what makes human spiritual seekers in the first place. Prayer and mantras are the connection of a seeker with the Divinity. May it be an out-of-control schedule or setting our hearts on things that don’t matter; these things tend a true seeker to drift away from spiritual practices, which is called negative spiritual momentum. But how could a seeker avoid this?

Building the spiritual momentum

Fasting.

 Fasting is not limited to the food we consume. It’s about distancing yourself from the distractions as well. To give that spiritual momentum a much-needed acceleration, you can give yourself a break from your routine. You can follow a fast, avoiding a few foods which make you sluggish or entertainment that consumes too much time. This will provide you with extra time to connect with yourself.

During old times, sages used to go to the wilderness from time to time. Why in the wilderness? There are very few distractions in the wilderness. It may not be possible to go to the wilderness and meditate in this modern age. Still, you can find that space by taking on a pilgrimage or attending a spiritual discourse where you will be able to follow fasting, devoiding yourself from constant distraction and worldly pleasures, granting you some extra time to connect with yourself and with the divine.

Worship. 

 Whenever you feel that you are being disconnected from the divine, change your timetable, and try to add a specific time for your daily spiritual ritual. Meditation, mantra chanting, yoga or praying, and worshipping is a very intense spiritual activity, and you must incorporate this into your lifestyle.

Worship is the practice that shall fuel your spiritual momentum. Take a yoga class. Join a like-minded spiritual community. Take at least 15 minutes from your busy schedule to connect with yourself. Meditate, and set aside some fixed time for prayers and reflections every day. Add a few of these to your worship practice, and it will accelerate your spiritual momentum.

Get guidance. 

 Every spiritual practitioner feels lost in their spiritual journey, resulting in negative spiritual momentum. Call them Guru, spiritual director, coach, or personal trainer. These experienced people will help you turn that disconnect into positive momentum.

Sanatana does not believe that everyone needs a Guru to achieve enlightenment, and there are thousands of such people who have reached enlightenment without a Guru. But having a Guru is beneficial for one’s spiritual knowledge and advancement. In other terms, it’s not mandatory to have a guru to receive enlightenment, but having a Guru makes it much more accessible.

Practice Gratitude.

 For a spiritual practitioner, gratitude should be a habit or practice instead of just a feeling. While feeling gratitude is one thing, the spiritual practice of gratitude is always chosen internally, trained intentionally, and practised in favourable and adverse circumstances.

Gratitude grants you a fresh perspective. It helps in developing a character and a virtuous life. Gratitude puts you in the right relationships with others and with yourself. It leads to the habit of servitude, and when you show appreciation in your actions, it triggers an unbreakable chain of goodness. All of these things boost your spiritual practice, taking you one step closer to your goal.        

Remember that the key to bringing that spiritual momentum in your life is to start today. You should not wait until tomorrow until you get that internal or external impulse. Do one small thing from the above list today to open up yourself to those universal powers.
