     विकटो नाम विख्यातः कामासुरविदारकः । मयूरवाहनश्चायं सौरब्रह्मवरः स्मृतः ॥

Vikato Naam Mantrah Kaamaasuravidaarakah। Mayurvaahanashchaayan Saurabrahmavarah Smrutah॥

Kamasur was pacified by an incarnation of Lord Ganapati named ‘Vikat’ (frightful) Who is also known as Mayurvahan (the one who rides a peacock).

The story of Lord Ganesha’s incarnation is truly fascinating, and it all begins with an intriguing incident. Let’s take a deep dive into this ancient tale, as told in the ancient text of Ganesh Puran. It’s a journey into the mystical world of Sanatana Dharma, where gods and cosmic forces come to life, weaving a captivating narrative that will transport you to a realm where the divine and the mortal collide.

    Birth of Kamasur

It is said that once, while coming out of the deep meditation, Shri Vishnu went into a trance of lust for a moment, due to which a very bright Asura (Demon) was born. That Asura reached the service of demon guru Shukracharya. Shukracharya said – ‘You were born because of lust; that’s why your name will be Kamasur (Kama means lust). You shall perform the ritual of Lord Shankar’s Panchakshari (five-lettered) mantra ‘Namah Shivay.'”

After doing severe penance for thousands of years, Devadhidev Mahadev appeared before Kamasur, satisfied with the harshest penance. As he was born out of Lord Vishnu, it was nearly impossible to kill him. Mahadev blessed the Asura with enormous strength, protection against all the celestial weapons, and freedom from old age and any kind of illness.

    Reign of Kamasur

After granting the blessing, Lord Shiv vanished, and Kamasur went back to his realm. Guided by Shukracharya, he became the king of demons and married Trishna (meaning unquenchable thirst), the daughter of Mahishasura. With a vast army at his command, the monstrous Asura set his sights on conquest.

He constructed a splendid and sturdy fortress, which he named Ratid (meaning pleasure and comfort). With his power growing, he subdued earthly kings, aiming to expand his dominion. He forcefully seized control of both heaven and hell, driving away the gods. Under his tyrannical rule, goodness faded, and dishonesty, theft, deception, abduction, and killings became rampant.

    The emergence of Lord Vikat

In the face of the ongoing disaster, the gods convened a secret gathering. At this gathering, Maharishi Mudgal was also present. He advised the deities to seek refuge in Lord Ganesha to overcome their troubles. Following the sage’s guidance, the gods worshipped Ganesh ji as instructed. Their sincere worship pleased Lord Ganesh, and Mayurvahan Ganaraj, taking the form of Vikat, appeared before them, saying, “Do not fear! I will grant your wish by defeating Kamasur.”

    Lord Vikat and Kamasur

Amidst the battle, Lord Vikat arrived mounted on a peacock, bringing destruction to the demon forces. Seeing this, Kamasur confronted him. Lord Vikat spoke, “Demon king! You’ve committed much wrongdoing, but I won’t let you continue down that path. I am the remover of all that is unjust and all those who act wrongly. If you wish to spare your life, abandon your faults and surrender.”

Kamasur’s rage surged, and he hurled a mighty mace toward Lord Vikat Ganesha. Yet, the mace fell harmlessly near the deity’s feet. Undeterred, Kamasur unleashed a potent celestial weapon known as Shakti, only to find it submitting at the divine feet of Lord Vikat Ganesha once again.

At that moment, Asura recalled the words of his mentor, Shukracharya. He had advised, “O King! If Lord Ganesha enters the battle, seek refuge in him. He holds the power over the creation, nurturing, and dissolution of all universes, including time itself. You won’t be able to control him.”

Upon remembering this counsel, Kamasur swiftly sought refuge at the divine feet of Lord Vikat Ganesha. He expressed remorse for his wrongdoings and began apologising. With kindness, Lord Vikat Ganesha granted him forgiveness and salvation. Eventually, Kamasur returned all that he had seized from the innocent earthly kings and gods. He then retreated to the netherworld, known as Patala.

What can we learn from the story of Lord Vikat Ganesha and Kamasur?

-Just as Kamasur sought help from Lord Ganesha to overcome lust (Kamasur), we too can conquer our desires by turning to spiritual practices.

-Kamasur’s wife, Trishna, represents unquenchable desires. By practising self-control and spiritual discipline, we can find contentment beyond material cravings.

-Rated, the city of pleasures reminds us not to get lost in material comforts. Focusing on spiritual growth helps us rise above worldly attachments.

With the Sadhana of Lord Vikat Ganesha, let’s change our negative traits through sincere effort and divine support, just like Kamasur transformed himself.
