Akshay Tritiya: Celebrating Unbounded Prosperity
Akshay means never diminishing, the eternal one. Tritiya means the third day. Akshay Tritiya falls on the third day of the Bright Half of Vaisakha month (Tritiya). Akshay Tritiya is one of the most auspicious days in Hindu tradition, promising unlimited optimism, positivity, and wealth.
Seekers believe that whatever you do on this day, its fruits get manifold and never-ending. And hence, seekers celebrate this day by meditating, mantra chanting, donating, and performing Yagyas (sacred ritualistic fire) on this auspicious day. In this blog, we are going to discuss the importance, and Do’s and Don’ts of Akshay Tritiya.
In ancient Hindu scriptures, this day has been given the utmost importance and significance.
It’s the birthday of Lord Parshurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. As a protector of the world, for reestablishing the Dharma and justice, Lord Vishnu took Avatar (Incarnation) on earth to help the righteous. Lord appeared in the form of Parshurama, a mighty and ruthless warrior, for correcting the atrocities of the rulers and cleansing the earth from their wrongdoings.
On the same day, River Ganges descended on earth for the wellbeing of humanity. After performing the penance for many years, King Bhagirath requested mother Ganga to appear on earth for the salvation of his ancestors. To break the fall, Lord Shiva took most of her fall on his head, allowing a small stream of river to flow on earth to better the world. River Ganga is the most critical spiritual river in the world, representing the flow of Shakti, the power behind liberation, into human consciousness represented by earth, by the grace of Shiva, and with the blessings of Guru, represented by Bhagirath.
The day is celebrated as the beginning of Treta Yuga. This Yuga has special significance in Hinduism, as the fifth, sixth, and the seventh incarnations of Lord Vishnu, namely Vamana, Parshurama, and Lord Rama, appeared in this age.
On this day, poor scholar Sudama visited his prince friend Lord Krishna in Dwarka. The story teaches us the true meaning of friendship. Lord Krishna rewarded his childhood friend Sudama with wealth, even when Sudhama did not ask anything from his beloved friend.
Legendary sage Vyasa started composing Mahabharata, the longest epic poem in the world. While the narrator was sage Vyasa, the one who was writing it down was no one other than Lord Ganesha. It is said that not a single human emotion lies outside Mahabharata, which has 200,000 verses.
On the same day, pleased with his penance, Lord Brahma granted Kubera a custodian position of wealth. This day is also celebrated as the appearance day of Divine Mother Annapurna. Known as the Divine Mother of food and nourishment, she is believed to be DivineMother Parvati’s incarnation, responsible for sustaining life in the universe.
