Brahma Muhurta: A spiritual Alarm

Ayurveda is the science of medicine, developed about eight thousand years ago in India. Ayur translates to long life, and Veda is an ancient science. This ancient science explores the practicality of creating a perfect balance in mind, body, and the sole, instructing ways, from what to do when you wake up in the morning till what to do when you hit the bed at night. About waking up in the morning, it says,

वर्णं कीर्तिं मतिं लक्ष्मिं स्वास्थ्यमायुश्च विन्दति । ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते सञ्जाग्रच्छ्रियं वा पङ्कजं यथा ॥

Meaning, the one who wakes up at Brahma Muhurta gains beauty, wealth, health, and longevity, just like a fully bloomed lotus.

The sacred text specifies the exact time of Brahma Muhurta, one and a half hours before dawn. It is believed that a significant shift of energy can be felt when this auspicious time begins. Vedic texts explain Brahma Muhurta as ‘the time of a creator’.

What science has to say about Brahma Muhurta?

Melatonin is a hormone secreted by a pineal gland in the brain, which helps to stabilize the mind, mood with improvement in sleep-wake timings and blood pressure regulation. It is observed that secretion of melatonin is highest during the time of Brahma Muhurta. So, it is quite natural that the human mind is most stable, calm, and most perceptive during this time.

The highest amount of nascent oxygen is available in the environment during Brahma Muhurta. This type of oxygen is known to mix with the blood, reacting with hemoglobin, resulting in the creation of oxyhemoglobin. Oxyhemoglobin is known to increase energy levels, boost the immune system, maintain the proper acid levels in the blood, and enhance the absorption of essential minerals and vitamins.

Brahma Muhurta is the time where your biological clock reboots, regulating the pattern and rhythm of your internal system.

So, it becomes essential to get the benefit of such a healthy time for our betterment. There are specific activities that are recommended to perform during this time.

What to do at Brahma Muhurta?

Our ancestors had a way of making people do healthy stuff under the name of religion. Thousands of years ago, they discovered the benefits of waking up during this time to practice rituals, which will prove fruitful in both spiritual and worldly realms. Ancient scriptures like Ayurveda, Shrutis, Ashtanga Hridaya recommend the following activities during this pious time.

Meditation: Meditation is the best way to introspect yourself. It’s a must-have me time to make resolutions and plans to fulfill them. This is the time where you are most aware.  During Brahma Muhurta, Sushumna Nadi is known to flow effortlessly. Air circulating through both nostrils makes the deep breathing easier,  making one enter into the state of deep meditation or Samadhi effortlessly during this time.

Mantra chanting: Mantras are the energy reservoirs, creating vibrations in the body, altering the state of mind, body, and soul. Chanting beej mantra or Stotras during this auspicious period creates powerful positive vibrations in this calm and composed atmosphere. Mantra Sadhana, especially involving the Ishta, is most fruitful when it is performed during Brahma Muhurta.

Learning: Ancient scripture Ashtanga Hridaya says Brahma Muhurta is the most suitable time to grasp spiritual wisdom. Overall calm and quiet surroundings with a mind in the state of alertness make this time an ideal time to read, learn, and study.

Introspection: Introspection allows you to notice negative patterns in your behavior. It helps you focus on the big picture while segregating the things you can and cannot control. Introspection allows you to define your priorities and your own terms of happiness instead of being influenced by society’s norms. Every morning, retracing the previous day’s actions without being judgemental helps you avoid falling prey to negative emotions, like greed, anger, pride, and jealousy. Introspection, a habit, allows you to choose the righteous action instead of the selfish one.

Due to the busy lifestyle, it becomes hard, or even impossible, to wake up early in the morning. Waking up so early, even before dawn, takes some practice, patience, and perseverance. Physical activity, hitting the bed early, without your mobile phone, and avoiding late-night snacking will help you fall asleep quickly. Sleeping with the alarm far away from your bed and sleeping while keeping the curtains open will help you wake up earlier.

So, instead of hitting that snooze button, and snoring again, throw away your blanket. Get up, get moving and start your day with some meditation, creating eternal bliss with your inner self. It’s Brahma Muhurta, time to re establish that lost connection with yourself.
