Cats and Spirituality
Do you have a cat? Many cat owners must have experienced this. The cat will sleep on your lap for hours. But all of a sudden, they wake up and keep on staring at nothing. No person, animal, object, or noise will be there, yet they will keep on staring there very intensely. It is like they are seeing something that we cannot see.
This unusual behaviour makes you wonder if they possess the ability to see something that we are not able to see, hear or feel? What are they seeing? Do they have a connection with some other dimension or realms that we are not aware of? Since the dawn of civilizations, cats have had an important place in spirituality. Let’s explore it further.
Cats in different cultures
Cats have been an important part of spirituality, and this relationship between cats and human beings goes back well beyond ten thousand years. In ancient Egypt, cats were considered sacred. Goddess Bastet was often depicted in a cat form. Cats were so sacred in Egyptian culture that killing a cat was forbidden.
In ancient Greece, cats were treated with respect as older people in the family. Whenever a cat was dead, ancient Greeks used to plan a funeral. They used to carry their dead cat to the sacred city of Bubastis and bury them in sacred repositories. Every family member used to shave their eyebrows as a sign of mourning.
In Vikings culture, Goddess Frejya was associated with cats. Two grey cats used to pull Frejya’s chariot to the war. Farmers used to leave two pans of milk outside their farmlands to receive blessings from the goddess and protect their crops.
Cats were considered carriers of good luck in Russia. Before entering the new home, they used to let the cat roam around inside the home so that it would attract positivity and good fortune. Ust like Russians, in Japanese folklore, cats were considered supernatural entities which bring good luck to the owner. Maneki-Neko is a Japanese cat figurine, with one paw in the air, representing a symbol of good luck.
Metaphysical effect of cats on our homes
In Sanatana, the cat represents positivity and the protector of children. Cat is the vehicle of Goddess Shashthi, the deity of vegetation and reproduction. She bestows children and assists pregnant ladies in childbirth. Hence, keeping a cat at home is considered auspicious.
Spiritual practitioners believe that cats have tremendous astral energy. They are known as the protector of homes. It’s believed that when cats stare or aimlessly wander in certain areas of your house, they prevent negativities or dark entities from entering your home.
Cats also wake you up when you are having nightmares. Somehow, cats know that we are under the influence of negativity and cannot come out of it while sleeping. They will wake you up by rubbing their soft faces or gently tapping their cushy paws on you.
Cats even ward off evil curses and evil spells. They also keep the toxic guest away from your house. Geo-pathogenic zones are the areas on the earth’s surface where there is a drastic disturbance of neutral electromagnetic fields. With their astral energies, Cats are known to neutralise an imbalanced electromagnetic field.
Cats, including the larger cats like tigers, lions, bobcats, pumas, and leopards, have a close connection with the Orion star system. The Orion star system is known for wisdom and enlightenment. Cats represent relaxation and how to move with stealth and balance. Many believe that due to their higher intuitions, they know where we are and the exact time of our arrival. This is evidence of their psychic and intuitive abilities.
What can we learn from the Cats
Mischief
Have you seen how the cat plays with the wool ball? We often have to protect our milk from cats, yet they manage to drink it somehow, without even noticing. Cats remind us about the importance of small and harmless mischief in life. Like a cat knocking down a few things from our table, we might think about knocking down a few things from our life we don’t need. Perhaps we are taking life too seriously and need to pour some fun and mischief as cats do.
Independence
Cats are one of the most independent pets out there. They are so independent that few people might even consider them aloof and unfriendly. But people who own them will tell you they are friendly and social. They create a perfect balance between social life and personality, so they will hang out with people they like. But at the same time, if they want to be left alone, you cannot force them to stay with you. We can learn how to be independent and yet social from these felines.
Peace
You must have seen a sleeping cat. They sleep with so much peace and cosiness that sometimes we envy them. Doctors believe that the purr of a cat positively affects our heart rate and joint. Purr can bring down the elevated heart rate, thus making you relaxed, more like your pet. When their minimal needs are met, they just curl up and nap without thinking about tomorrow or the next year. They just relax and enjoy the moment.
Grace.
You will never see a cat running behind an unknown vehicle. You will never see them bathing in mud. They constantly lick themselves and keep them clean and well-groomed. They carry themselves with grace and certain elegance; hence, models walking on the fashion show ramp is called a catwalk. They tiptoe around the house so silently that we never know when they come and go. No matter how bad the situation is, we can learn how to carry ourselves with poise and elegance from cats.
We hope you have gained some new insight regarding spirituality and its close connection with the cats. When you hang out with your cat, try to analyse how you feel with awareness. Note down the thoughts, feelings, and ideas that inspire you. Share with us in the comments below.
