What is Chhath Puja?
This divine festival unfolds over the course of four days, commencing on the Shashthi, which is the sixth day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Kartik. Chhath Puja celebrations have their roots in ancient epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata Shiv-Mahapuran, etc.
Devotees observe a rigorous fast for a remarkable 36 hours, abiding by strict guidelines. A unique aspect of this fast is the enduring waterless abstention for over twenty-four hours. Although the primary day of fasting falls on the sixth day of Kartik month, the celebration extends for four days, concluding with the offering of Arghya to the rising sun at dawn.
Intrigued by this four-day spiritual odyssey? Let’s delve deeper into the essence and rituals of this sacred festival.
Chhath 2024 celebration and dates:
Day 1 of Nahay Khay: It all begins with purity and meditation. The fasting women, after their cleansing bath, break their fast by consuming a meal of pumpkin and rice. During Nahay Khay, devotees embrace pure and Satvik foods. It’s a day of unity, for the entire household partakes in a meal only after the one observing Chhat Puja Vrat has finished eating.
This year, Nahay Khay will be held on November 5th, 2024.
Day 2 of Kharna: Kharna, the second day of Chhath Puja, is a time of devotion. Fasting women, having bathed in preparation, prepare a sacred offering of rice pudding made from rice and jaggery. This Kheer is then offered to the divine Kharna Mata. After the evening Puja, the entire family shares in the blessed Kharna Prasad before their meal, recognizing its profound significance.
This year, Kharna will be celebrated on November 6th, 2024.
Day 3 of Pahala Arghya: On this day, the third day of Chhath Puja, a rigorous Nirjala fast, devoid of water, is observed. The evening is marked by the offering of Arag or Arghya, a libation of water to the setting sun, signifying the pinnacle of Chhath Puja worship. Devotees, dressed in new and colourful clothes and wearing ornaments, gather at the Ghat (riverbanks) to express their reverence during this sacred moment while singing folk songs and hymns praising Lord Sun and Divine Mother Chhathi Maa.
This time, the evening Arghya of Chhath Puja will be offered on 7th November.
Day 4 of Usha Arghya: As the seventh day of Kartik Month dawns, it brings the conclusion of the great festival of Chhath. This final day is a time for offering Arghya to the rising sun as devotees break their fast, marking the harmonious conclusion of this spiritually enriching journey.
This year, the Doosra Arghya of Chhath Puja will be offered on 8th November.
