Devi Lankeshwari: Story of Maa Bhagwati and Shri Ram
In the ancient tales of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, we discover a remarkable land called Lanka. As you may already know, a great feat occurred when Lord Hanuman, filled with devotion and strength, set ablaze half of Lanka. And in the mighty battle between the virtuous forces led by Shri Ram and the demonic forces under the rule of King Ravana, the remaining parts of Lanka were ravaged.
During Ravana’s unholy reign that lasted for a thousand years, this was the first time that external forces dared to invade the sacred land of Lanka. It begs the question: What safeguarded Lanka all those years? What unseen forces protected it from harm?
If you’re curious to unravel the mysteries and discover the reason behind the invasion of Lanka, join us in this captivating blog. Delve into the sacred pages of the Devi Bhagvatam as we uncover a story that holds the answers you seek.
Lanka Under the Protection of Maa Bhagwati
In the ancient times of divine reverence, a fascinating tale unfolds as Ravana, through his unwavering devotion to the Divine Mother Bhagwati, gains victory over the three realms of Heaven, earth, and hell. The great kingdom of Lanka itself was blessed and protected by the grace of Maa Bhagwati. However, Ravana’s tyranny grew boundless, and the Earth, burdened by his atrocities, sought solace in Lord Brahma.
Moved by the Earth’s plight, Lord Brahma beseeched Lord Vishnu to intervene and put an end to Ravana’s reign of terror. Lord Vishnu, with His infinite compassion, assured Lord Brahma that He would incarnate as a son in King Dasharatha’s kingdom and bring about the downfall of Ravana. But here lies a profound truth: as long as Maa Bhagwati shielded Lanka and bestowed Her divine protection upon Ravana, no one could harm him.
Therefore, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva set forth on a pilgrimage to the sacred abode of Maa Jagdishwari Bhagwati in Kailasa, seeking Her divine blessings. With immense grace and radiance, Maa Bhagwati appeared before them, knowing well the purpose of their arrival.
Holy Trinity and Maa Bhagwati
With utmost humility, Lord Vishnu spoke to the divine Mother, saying, “Oh Mother! Ravana has attained dominion over the three realms by your divine grace. The world is burdened by his cruel acts. You, as the presiding deity of Lanka, personally shield and protect his city. But how can the enemy of the gods, Ravana, be vanquished? Who can bring harm to the one whom you yourself safeguard? Oh Maa Jagdamba, the Mother of the Universe! We have sought refuge in your divine abode, seeking guidance and a solution to protect this world from his tyranny.”
The Divine Mother, with utmost grace, responded, saying, “Oh Madhusudan, Ravana has offered devoted worship to me for an extended period. It is indeed true that I reside in Lanka as the Lankeshwari Goddess solely to protect him. By my divine blessings, all his desires have been fulfilled thus far. However, with the arrogance of his strength, he is now causing immense suffering to the innocent world. I, myself, am contemplating his destruction.
Brahmaji’s words are wise and true – you are the chosen one who can assume a human form and put an end to the tyranny of this demon king. The Divine Goddess Lakshmi, the embodiment of prosperity and abundance, will also assist you by taking incarnation on Earth as Maa Sita. She will become your beloved wife, but alas, Ravana, driven by uncontrollable lust, will abduct her. As soon as the Divine Mother Lakshmi enters his Lanka, I will relinquish my divine protection over the land. Lankeshwari will leave Lanka, and will take away the sanctity along with Her.
Oh Madhusudan! When you incarnate, Maharishi Vasishtha, the esteemed son of Lord Brahma, will impart a secret mantra to you. Through the power of this sacred mantra, you will emerge victorious in a fierce battle against Ravana. By my divine grace, you will traverse the vast ocean with an army of devoted monkeys and set foot in Lanka.
Oh Lord! To vanquish Ravana, you shall fashion a clay idol of me on the seashore during the autumn season. Following the Vedic rituals as instructed by Lord Brahma, you will worship the idol. This sacred act will grant you the unparalleled fame that comes with the destruction of Ravana.
Therefore, it is imperative for you to incarnate in human form swiftly, for the sole purpose of bringing about the downfall of the wicked Ravana and restoring harmony to the world.”
Ramayan and Maa Bhagwati
After receiving the assurance from Maa Bhagwati, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Mahesh, the Tridev, returned to their celestial abodes. In due time, Lord Vishnu took His divine incarnation as Shri Ram. Alongside, Bhagwati Lakshmi, the embodiment of divine beauty, manifested on Earth as a supremely graceful girl in the royal household of Maharaja Janak.
Accompanied by the sage Vishwamitra, Lord Shri Ram embarked on a sacred journey to protect the Yagya (sacred ritual) and vanquished the demons who threatened its sanctity. Later, in a remarkable feat, Lord Shri Ram shattered the mighty bow of King Janak and won the hand of Maa Sita as His beloved wife.
Adhering to His father’s decree, Lord Shri Ram willingly ventured into the forest, embracing a fourteen-year exile. It was during this period that the malevolent Ravana, driven by his insatiable lust and desire for vengeance, abducted Maa Sita. However, by the divine grace of Maa Bhagwati, Lord Shri Ram embarked on a heroic quest to rescue His beloved wife.
In the climactic showdown, Lord Shri Ram, armed with the blessings of Maa Bhagwati, confronted Ravana in the great city of Lanka. With divine intervention, Lord Shri Ram triumphed over the forces of darkness and vanquished Ravana, bringing an end to his tyranny. Through this divine victory, the sacred reign of Ramrajya, a realm governed by righteousness and harmony, was established.
Divine Grace of Maa Bhagwati
As we conclude this spiritual journey, we are left awe-inspired by the divine grace and power of Maa Bhagwati. Her unwavering protection of Lanka and Her pivotal role in shaping the events surrounding Ravana’s downfall exemplify Her supreme divinity.
Maa Bhagwati, the epitome of strength and compassion, guided Lord Shri Ram on His path to righteousness and ensured the triumph of good over evil. Through Her divine intervention, She enabled the establishment of Ramrajya, a glorious era of righteousness and harmony.
We are reminded of Maa Bhagwati’s boundless love and unwavering support, as She bestowed Her blessings upon Lord Shri Ram and His endeavors. Her grace resonates in every aspect of this captivating tale, reminding us of the profound influence of the divine in our lives.
Let us take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to Maa Bhagwati, who, through Her divine wisdom and protection, guided the course of events, bringing about the ultimate victory of righteousness. May we seek Her blessings and strive to embody the virtues of love, compassion, and righteousness in our own lives.
