Easy to follow Vastu tips for Your Puja (Altar) Room

What is a Puja room for you? Is it a space where you meditate? Is it a place where you keep the Vigrahas (consecrated idol) or paintings of your Divine? Is it a room where you practise your rituals? Does it host a photograph or a picture of your Guru?

The puja room is the most sacred space in your house. It’s the source of positivity for your home, where you can find peace of mind. This is where you worship your Gods for happiness and prosperity for your family.

The placement and construction of a Puja room play a crucial role when it comes to Vastu. Hence, following a few guidelines is imperative to have an ideal Puja room in your home. In this blog, we are giving a few Vastu tips for your Puja room you can follow to maximise the benefits of your Sadhana.

Location.

 Even though there is no hardened rule for the location, many Vastu experts recommend the northeast location. While constructing a prayer room in your home, one should avoid the following places:

 -Sharing a prayer room wall with a toilet or bathroom. 

 -Facing toilet. 

 -Under the staircase and 

 -Right in front of the main door of the home.

 As per Vastu Shastra, the basement or the first floor is not ideal for the Puja room. It must be placed on the ground floor of the home.

Design.

  Many of us do not live in a bungalow but in an apartment. Vastu Shastra suggests that you should construct the roof of your Puja room in a pyramid or Gopuram-like shape. One of the essential aspects of the Puja room is to ensure the uninterrupted flow of positivity. If the roof has a dome or pyramid-like shape, it helps to magnify these cosmic rays entering our homes.

Space.

 While deciding on the space for the Puja room, you must think about your spiritual practice. Are you going to meditate in that room? Are a few other family members going to sit for meditation with you? 

Then, you should think about getting a bigger space.

If there will be one person who will perform a Puja in front of the Vigrahas, then a small room with a double door grill shall be enough. Needless to say, the shelves should be arranged in such a way that the room should appear clutter-free. For keeping all the Puja equipment, you can invest in a good quality drawer. 

 Storage cabinets should be placed in south or west quadrants so they would allow the uninterrupted flow of natural light and air. Prayer or Aarti books can be kept in a cabinet to avoid fire hazards and clutter.

Position of the idols. 

 Idols are lifeless busts. They become Vigrahas when we perform their consecration with the mantra chanting and with all the necessary Sanskaras. After the initial consecration, they become a member of our family, a powerful source of piousness and positivity. It’s vital that we treat these Vigrahas with the utmost respect.

Vigraha should be placed in such a position that when you sit for the Puja, they will make eye contact with you. Being said, for the home prayer room, you should avoid Vigrahas taller than two feet. They should be placed slightly away from each other and away from the wall in order to allow enough airflow. They should be kept in such a direction that while praying, the devotee should face east or north while praying.

Colour.

 Spirituality has a very close connection with colours. Different colours activate different emotions and affect our auras and chakras within the body. Many Vastu experts only recommend different colours for the Puja room after carefully studying the house layout, family orientation, and many other things.    

 -All in white Puja room represents purity and peace, radiating positive vibes. Instead of white colour, many prefer white marble as a construction material for the Puja room. 

 -Many recommend yellow colour as it is associated with happiness and positivity. As per Vastu Shastra, a Puja room facing the northeast maximises good energy. 

 -In India, you cannot imagine a religious ceremony without the marigold flower because they are considered auspicious. The orange-colored Puja room brings that piousness and auspiciousness to your home. 

 -Many Vastu experts recommend the colour green for the Puja room. It reflects the expression of life and nature itself, and not to mention, it helps to open up and balance the heart chakra.

 In a nutshell, Vastu Shastra says the colours should be light, bright, and tranquil. One should avoid dark colours that prohibit the influx of light and positivity.
