GANESH UPASANA | Why worship Shri Ganesha?
GANESH UPASANA
Shri Ganapati is a universal deity. This is a Divinity whose devotion extends beyond religion, caste, creed, borders, etc. Lord Ganesha is worshiped not only in India but all over the world. Lord Ganesh is known by various names such as Buddhi Data (Wisdom giver), Sukhkarta (creator of happiness), and Vighnaharta (remover of danger). From little children to adults, this is the deity that everyone feels a close attachment to.
Devotees believe that all of their problems are removed when they bow before Lord Ganesha. Tuesday is considered to be the day of Lord Ganesha. However, as per the ancient scriptures like Puranas, it is said that the worship of Lord Ganesha on other days is very useful to overcome the problems and difficulties in life.
Lord Ganesh is honored to be worshiped before any other deity while conducting a religious ceremony. It has a rather interesting story behind it that we can read in the Brahmavaivartapurana (Ganapati Khand) of Skanda Purana. After the celestial marriage of Shiva-Parvati, they had no children for some time. Then, Lord Shiva asked Divine Mother Parvati to observe the auspicious ‘Punyak’ asceticism of Lord Vishnu. Pleased with Parvati’s ‘Punyak’ Sadhana, Lord Vishnu blessed Maa Parvati with a son.
Hearing about the birth of a son, all the Gods, Sages, Gandharvas, etc., came to see the child. Shani Maharaj was also present among those deities. But Shanidev avoided seeing the newborn because of the curse given by his wife of having devastating eyesight. But when Maa Parvati requested him to see Her child, unable to refuse the request of the Divine Mother, as soon as Shani Dev looked at the child, the child Ganesh’s neck was separated from the body.
On the lamentation of Mother Parvati, Lord Vishnu cut off the head of an elephant from the forest on the banks of the Pushpa Bhadra river and put it on Ganesha’s neck. Just for having the head of an elephant, no one should ever reject Lord Ganesha. Thinking this, Lord Vishnu, along with other deities, decided that Ganesha would be worshiped first on all auspicious occasions, and no deity would accept worship from the devotee before his worship.
Why worship Shri Ganesha?
His worship is the worship of excellence. Lord Ganesha is the God who is Nirguna, formless, and the devotees believe He is incorporeal, the creator of all worlds, the creator of all scriptures, and the one who is different from all.
There are various ways of worshiping Lord Ganesha. Naamsmaran (chanting) is also a form of worship. This is the simplest form of Navavidha bhakti (devotion) without any strings attached to the Karma-Kanda. Apart from Shodashopachara Puja, and Yantra Puja, there are many ways to worship Lord Ganapati. The result of this changes the fate of a seeker, and they gain happiness, prosperity, and luxury in life. However, it is said that this deity is disciplined regarding the Sadhana (rituals). So let’s know how we can perform the Ganesh Upasana.
Few requirements before you begin Lord Ganesh Upasana:
Setting the proper intention is crucial because selfishness kills a seeker’s spiritual progress. Make sure your heart is filled with love and devotion for the Lord Ganapati Ji, not just a simple thirst for wealth or power. There is nothing wrong in seeking prosperity, wealth, or worldly success from the Divine. But you must keep in mind that when you seek prosperity for the Lord, you must intend to give it back to the family, society, and the whole world. Keep in mind that your Sadhana will stand firmly on two feet of patience and consistency. Success requires perseverance and a commitment to hard, hard work.

Offer 21 Durva leaves while reciting the mantra of Lord Ganesha- “Om Gang Ganapataye Namah.” Offer laddoos or Modak to Shri Ganeshji. After this, sit for the Ganesh Upasana.
In a prayer room, sit on a mat, wearing yellow-colored loose clothing. Light a Ghee Diya (Clarified butter lamp) on your left and close your eyes, focusing on your breath. Relax your body, take deep breaths from the bottom of your stomach twenty times, and focus your mind. For the next five minutes, chant the mantra given by your Guru in mind. Then, take the rosary in your right hand and Meditate, visualizing Ganesh Ji. Start chanting the Ganesh Ji Maha-mantra.
“Om Namo Siddhi Vinayakaya, Sarva Karya Kartrey Sarva Vighna Prashamnay, Sarva Rajaya Vashyakarnaya”
“Sarvajan Sarvastree Purush, Aakarshanaya Shreeng Om Swaha”
Chant this mantra 108 times. If you chant this mantra during the Ganesh Chaturthi, this mantra will be effective for you. Chant this mantra three times before going out of the house to invite success into your life. After you have completed your daily count, thank Shri Ganesh Ji for everything and bow down to His Vigraha. You can now get up, fold the mat you were sitting on, and replace it and the rosary to its original place. Taking blessings from your Guru or elderly in the home, continue with your day.
