How Divine Maa Bhagwati humbled Lord Indra

Today, we embark on a journey into the realm of an ancient story, where the mighty Lord Indra, the ruler of heavens, learned a humbling lesson from the Divine Mother, Maa Bhagwati.

So, gather around, dear seekers, as we step into the world where the divine orchestrates its dance upon the stage of human experience. As we unveil the layers of this tale, consider the relevance it holds in the tapestry of our lives. Allow yourself to be swept away by the currents of wisdom that flow from the encounter between Lord Indra and the Divine Maa Bhagwati.

The War

In a time long ago, a mighty war raged between proud demons and celestial Gods. This incredible battle spanned a hundred years without rest. In those days, Bhagwati Adishakti (Primordial Power) showered Her grace upon the deities, and under Her benevolent gaze, they emerged victorious. The defeated demons were compelled to retreat, seeking refuge in the depths of Patal Lok.

As the demons’ defeat gave way to the Gods’ triumph, boundless joy filled the hearts of the celestial beings. Their valorous feats echoed far and wide, as they proudly, rather egotistically shared their tales of bravery with all who would listen.

The Mysterious Yaksha

Bhagwati Maa Adishakti (Primordial Power) appeared before the Gods in the form of a Yaksha – a benevolent nature-spirit. Her presence was radiant, as if illuminated by the brilliance of a thousand suns. She had come to bestow supreme grace upon the deities and to dismantle the fortress of their ego.

Seeing this stunning Yaksha, Devraj, the King of the Gods, Lord Indra, took a step forward. He recognized the significance of the radiant Yaksha’s appearance and decided to uncover the identity of this ethereal being. With resolve, He called upon Lord Agni, the elemental deity of fire, and dispatched him to engage the Yaksha in conversation.

Lord Agni and the Yaksha

Obeying Indra’s command, Lord Agni approached the Yaksha with humility. The Yaksha, a paragon of serenity, turned to Lord Agni and made a request – “Before I reveal who I am, I wish to know about you. Introduce yourself and share your might.”

With pride and confidence, Lord Agni spoke – “I am Lord Agni, the fiery force that possesses the power to engulf the entire universe in flames.” However, in response, the Yaksha placed a humble straw before Lord Agni and calmly challenged Him – “If your might is as immense as you claim, showcase it by reducing this straw to ashes.”

Determined to prove His potency, Lord Agni summoned all his formidable strength to burn the seemingly insignificant straw. But despite His fiery intensity, the straw remained untouched by His flames. With a heart heavy with realisation, Lord Agni retreated from the presence of the Yaksha and returned to Indra’s side, recounting the encounter in full detail.

Lord Vayu and the Yaksha

After that Devraj Indra called Lord Vayu (wind) and said ‘ Vayudev! This whole world is full of you, the world has become conscious only because of your efforts. You, being the giver of life, manage all the living beings. So now you go and find out about this Yaksha.’

In response, the Yaksha issued a gentle challenge to Lord Vayu. “Demonstrate your might,” the Yaksha said, “blow upon this straw with all the force you possess.” Lord Vayu, filled with His celestial power, directed His wind currents toward the straw. Despite His immense strength, the straw remained unmoved, as if anchored by an unseen force.

With humility washing over Him, Lord Vayu returned to Indra, His pride humbled by the encounter. The assembly of Gods turned their attention to Indra, acknowledging His authority as their leader. “Devraj,” they implored, “you are our master. Now, it falls upon you to seek out complete understanding about the Yaksha.”

Lord Indra and Maa Bhagwati

In the end, Devraj Indra Himself approached the Yaksha with pride, but the radiant Yaksha disappeared at the same moment. Even after searching for many years, Yaksha could not be found anywhere in the universe. All-knowing, all-wise Devraj Indra drowned in shame after seeing this incident.

To know the identity of the Yaksha, He started to chant and meditate on the Beej (seed) mantra of Divine Mother Bhagwati. His pride was destroyed due to His surrender and His Sadhana. After that, Maa Bhagwati Adishakti appeared to Him, wielding various weapons along with the Abhay Mudra (gesture of reassurance and safety).

Indra was filled with gratitude after getting the audience with Maa Bhagwati. He praised Mother Bhagwati in different ways in a compassionate voice and prayed to be told the secret of the Yaksha.

Maa Bhagwati said to Lord Indra – “Devraj! You have conquered the demons by my power alone. Out of pride, you have forgotten me, the ultimate soul of the universe. Your intelligence was covered with your ego. That’s why my unique glory appeared in the form of the Yaksha, only to remind you. You people should leave your pride and surrender to me.”
