Kartik Purnima Lunar Eclipse, Dos, and Don’ts
In Mahabharata, Lord Krishna says, among all the plants, I love the Tulasi plant, among all the pilgrimages, I adore Dwarika, among all the days, Ekadashi is my favourite one, and among all the months of the year, I am fond of Kartik month the most.
The day is also known as Tripurari Purnima, or Kartik Purnima, which arrives on the 15th lunar day of the month Kartik and is considered one of the most auspicious days for Hindu, Sikh, and Jain followers. As we will be witnessing a lunar eclipse on this day, it becomes an extra exceptional coincidence with a brilliant opportunity for spiritual seekers to expand their Sadhana. In this blog, we will learn about the dos and don’ts of the Kartik Purnima Lunar eclipse 2022.
The Legend of Tripurantaka
Taarakaaksha, Kamalaaksha and Vidyunmaali were three sons of demon Taraka. All three performed penance to get blessings from Lord Brahma and received terrible powers. Each of them was gifted with a flying city, with a boon, that those cities could only be destroyed with one arrow, only when they converge in an open spot.
Three brothers created havoc on the earth for a thousand years, torturing the Demigods, sages, and hermits. All of them went to Lord Shiva for liberation from the extreme torture of the demons. Gathering powers from the Gods, Lord Vishnu created a bow with a single fiery arrow. Brahma as a Charioteer, Lord Shiva shot that cosmic arrow at the precise moment when the three cities converged on one point and destroyed it. Henceforward, the day was known as Tripurari Purnima, when Tripuras (three towns) were destroyed.
-This auspicious day marks the birth of the first incarnation of Lord Vishnu- Matsya Avatara.
-Vrinda, the personification of the auspicious plant Tulsi, was born on this day. Kartikeya, the legendary God of war and Lord commander of the Divine celestial armies, was born today.
-This day is essential for followers of Sikhism, as Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of the Sikh faith, was born on Kartik Purnima.
-Jain followers believe that Adinath Swami, the first Tirthankara, delivers his first sermon on this auspicious day.
-Last but not least, this is the first full moon, after the Chaturmasa (four months), and hence considered highly auspicious for the pilgrims.
