Knowledge and Wisdom
Wisdom. Norse God all-father Odin gave his one eye for this. Egyptian God Isis, who is said to be more clever than a million Gods, possessed it. Two thousand five hundred years ago, Goddess Anahit was the primary deity in Armenia, and prayed for the same power of wisdom. Manjushri, a Divine Buddhist God, was known as the father of wisdom, and Greek Goddess Athena is said to be the Goddess of the same.
In Hinduism, for thousands of years, Divine Mother Saraswati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Hayagriva have been associated with the power of wisdom. In this blog, we will be examining what wisdom means, what really differentiates information, knowledge, and wisdom. At the end of this blog, we will be sharing a very potent Mantra for gaining higher levels of wisdom.
What is information, knowledge, and wisdom?
Information means having data and the power to interpret, which is helpful to understand what it’s covering. Information gives contexts and significance to the information one possesses. On the other hand, knowledge is primarily the outcome of the learning and education of an individual. A knowledgeable person uses the data strategically to achieve the objectives, with clarity of facts and truths.
Wisdom comes from experiences. It’s a practical ability to make the right choices in life. It’s an ability to know the truth and what’s right. Applying knowledge, experience, and intuition when an individual comes to a decision makes a wise decision. Information and knowledge can be exchanged, but it is said that no one can transfer wisdom.
Every day, we are bombarded with new and ever changing information, and hence, information and knowledge are considered bound by the laws of time. On the other hand, wisdom is timeless. Our choices, pursuit of knowledge, and relationships with other beings are governed by wisdom.
The Source of the information and knowledge can be from various origins. You can acquire knowledge from learning, education, and reflection. Wisdom is knowledge of self, knowledge of intuition, and knowledge of who we are, defining and redefining our true character.
What is spiritual wisdom?
Moksha, or liberation, is one of the primary goals of a seeker in Hinduism. Liberation means merging with the Divine, being released from the endless cycle of birth, life, and death. There are three ways to achieve this. Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Karma Yoga (fulfilment of duties), and the third one is Jnana Yoga(path of wisdom).
Old scriptures of Upanishads have specifically categorized the Jnana (knowledge) in two parts. The lower knowledge includes the understanding of science, mathematics, philosophy, trade, etc. It also includes the knowledge of Dharma (righteous duties) and Adharma (unrighteous duties).
However, there is no need to disregard the importance of this lower knowledge because Upanishads say that this lower form of knowledge helps us build the necessary discipline to acquire a higher knowledge.
The higher knowledge is called wisdom, which according to Upanishads, is the higher form of knowledge. By understanding the supreme self, one can be one with the supreme consciousness or Brahmam. As an individual keeps on climbing the ladder of knowledge, his wisdom keeps increasing as per his experiences.
But what exactly constitutes spiritual wisdom? Vedas say that the factors defining the path of wisdom are control over the senses, refinement of the speech, mastery over the mind, supremacy over the will, exercising consideration, engaging in meditation and self-reflection, and ever-developing understanding of the relationship between yourself and the universe.
What are the signs of a true wise seeker?
-A true seeker will never be satisfied with his spiritual knowledge. By keeping the relationship with the universe in mind, a true seeker will always be learning.
-A wise seeker has mastery over when to speak, and more ever, when not to speak. The Bible says A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.
-Ability to make the right choices comes as one gets introduced to wisdom. When a seeker establishes his connection with the Divine, he trusts that the Divine has the best plan for him. A wise seeker trusts his Guru and Ishta Devata and allows them to direct his path.
-Even though it is said that wisdom is not transferable, a wise seeker always tries to teach others what he has learned from his wisdom.
-When a wise seeker gets into a situation out of his control, he leans on the universal powers seeking help from them. He allows God to take the steering wheel, and he enjoys the ride without being judgemental about it.
