Maa Bhairavi | The Dasa Mahavidyas

In the Dasa Mahavidya Series, we are discussing Maa Bhairavi today. The fifth of the Ten Mahavidyas. To read the earlier blogs in the series, click the links below.

In this blog, we discuss the appearance, how to do Her Sadhana, what Her Mantras are, and the benefits of Her Sadhana.

The word Bhairavi means that which is frightful, fear-provoking, terrible or horrible. But why would a MotHer provoke fear in Her children you ask? Well, She doesn’t. She provokes fear in the face of ignorance, of darkness, and of everything that is not right for Her children. Think of Her as the ever protecting MotHer who slays everything and anything harmful to Her children. Her ability to kill all darkness comes from the fact that She shines with the effulgence of ten thousand rising suns. She is also the consciousness and Kundalini power residing in all of us.

    Her Appearance

True to Her description, Her complexion is that of a rising sun, only a thousand times brighter. She holds the sword on knowledge in one hand and the head of a demon in the otHer representing destruction of ego. Just like Maa Bhuvaneshwari, Her otHer two hands display Abhaymudra and Varadmudra, encouraging fearlessness and granting boons respectively.

    Her Sadhana

Below are the steps for Her Sadhana –

    1. Take a shower and completely clean your body,

    2. Meditate with Kleem Kalikaye Namah or your Guru Mantra and clean your energy body and your mind

    3. Wear red clothes if possible,

    4. Sit on a red color cloth,

    5. Light a Ghee Lamp

    6. Place Her picture in front of you and do Her Mantra Jaap for 108 times –

Om Tripurayai Vidmahe Mahabhairavyai Dhimahi Tanno Devi Prachodayat

    7. During Sadhana, pray to Her to remove everything from your life that doesn’t serve your highest good.

    8. After the Mantra Jaap, thank Her in advance for removing all obstacles and then open your eyes, rub your palms and touch your palms on your face and chest.

    Benefits of Maa Bhairavi Sadhana

Her Sadhana not only removes all obstacles and darkness from your path, but it also makes space for the light and success to come in which She showers you with. Her Sadhana makes you successful in all aspects of life and eventually removes everything that isn’t necessary, leading you to see the complete and eternal truth.
