Maa Bhuvaneshwari | The Dasa Mahavidyas
In the Dasa Mahavidya Series, we are discussing Maa Bhuvaneshwari today. The fourth of the Ten Mahavidyas. To read the earlier blogs in the series, click the links below
In this blog, we discuss the appearance, how to do Her Sadhana, what Her Mantras are, and the benefits of Her Sadhana.
Bhuvana means the Universe, the existing world, the manifested world, and Ishwari means the female ruler or sovereign. Bhuvaneshwari tHerefore means, Ruler of the World. The story behind Her inception is that Lord Brahma wanted to create the Universe and so he did intense Tapasya to invite the energy of creation which was Kriya Shakti. This is when Parmeshwari or the female Divine answered his prayers and manifested in the form of Bhu Devi or Bhuvaneshwari. Bhu also means earth.
Her Appearance
Maa Bhuvaneshwari is a glowing red in complexion –just like a rising sun- and looks similar to Maa Tripurasundari. She dons a crescent moon on Her brow and is heavily clad with jewelry. The jewelry symbolizes the importance of the material world. She is also sometimes shown as holding a jeweled drinking cup filled to the brim with gemstones, reminding us that She is the source of all abundance.
She sits on a Lotus Throne and has Three Eyes that symbolize Her awareness of the past, present, and future.
She holds a noose and a goad, implying that it is She who creates all Maya and has us under the veil of Maya but it is also She has the power to cut the veil of illusion and set us free.
Her otHer two hands are in Abhay Mudra and Blessing Positions respectively.
Her Sadhana
For a Goddess who rules the Universe and is both the creator and destroyer of Maya, Her Sadhana is pretty simple. All you need to do is cleanse yourself, go to a room wHere no one would disturb you, do Pranayam and some exercises to the ground and connect to the earth, cleansing and aligning your Chakras and then pick up your Jaap Mala and Chant any of the below Mantras –
- Aam Shreem Hreem Kleem Kleem Hreem Shreem Krom
- Hreem Bhuvaneshwaryai Namah
- Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Bhuvaneshwaryai Namah
It will be a bonus if you can get a picture of Maa Bhuvaneshwari and look at Her eyes as you chant the Mantra with a smile on your face thanking Her for everything She has given you. After chanting the Mantra for 108 times, ask Her for what you truly desire and then thank Her in advance for fulfilling it. Make sure what you ask for is positive and serves the greater good.
Doing this Sadhana for 21 days with one desire or goal in mind makes it successful.
Benefits of Maa Bhuvaneshwari Sadhana
As per Rig Veda, any Sadhak who completes Maa Bhuvaneshwari’s Sadhana successfully is bound to be blessed by riches and power like Lord Indra. It is said that even Lord Rama and Lord Krishna accomplished this Sadhana and hence had Ram Rajya and Dwarka to their credit. Success, fame, wealth, and honor are guaranteed when one does Her Sadhana. Above all these though, the Sadhak is also signing up to enable Maa to free him or her of all the illusions of Maya and finally liberate which is the last step for the Sadhak. As we mentioned before, Maa is not only the creator but all the destroyer of all illusions.
