Maa Dhumavati | The Dasa Mahavidyas

In the Dasa Mahavidya Series, we are

discussing Maa Dhumavati today. The seventh of the Ten Mahavidyas. To read theearlier blogs in the series, click the links below.

In this blog, we discuss Her Appearance, Her Power, and the Benefits of Her Sadhana.

She is wicked and crooked and a widow. These three words are the first to come to anyone’s mind when they first see Maa Dhumavati. People are scared of Her and She is sort of a taboo amongst the Ten Mahavidyas because She is the only one who manifests in the form of a widow. Her name means the smoky one. Maa Dhumavati is the eldest of all the Maha Vidyas. It is said that when Sati had burnt Herself in the Yagya Fire that Her FatHer had organized, Dhumavati was created from the smoke of what was left of Sati. Hence Maa Dhumavati is often seen as sad, defeated, or dejected. Despite all this, it is said that anyone and everyone who prays to Her is blessed with whatever wish they ask for. The reasoning behind this is simple, a MotHer’s love in any form is always giving and nurturing, no matter how sad or upset She is.

    Her Appearance

Maa Dhumavati sits on a crow and wears a white saree. She doesn’t wear any ornaments or accessories. Even Her clothes are torn and dirty. She has crooked teeth and hence a crooked smile that provokes fear in people who look at Her the first time. She also is often shown sitting on a cart which has nothing to pull it, symbolizing that a widow is a financial burden on the extended family and has lost Her stance in the society.

However, Her appearance at large symbolizes everything that is often ignored or is taboo in the society but is still true. Her appearance also reminds one that young age and beauty fade eventually and it is wisdom and the power to abstain yet sustain that leads us to ultimate liberation.

    Her Sadhana

Maa Dhumavati’s Sadhana requires proper initiation by a Guru and hence we are unable to list Her Sadhana Vidhi and Mantra Here.

    Her Sadhana Benefits

    1. Contrary to Her appearance, She protects Her devotees from poverty, sadness, death of family members, widowhood, great losses, misfortune, and diseases.

    2. She blesses you with improvised concentration and the ability to abstain from anything that might be a hindrance in your liberation

    3. She destroys your enemies and helps you win any competition you enter.
