Maa Tara | The Dasa Mahavidyas
In the Dasa Mahavidya Series, we are discussing Maa Tara today. The second of the Ten Mahavidyas. To read the first and second blogs in the series, click the links below.
In this blog, we discuss the appearance, how to worship her, what her Mantras are, and the benefits of worshipping her.
Her Appearance
Maa Tara is blue in complexion. Just like Maa Kali, she too stands on a corpse, has her tongue out with blood dripping off it, and wears headgear and necklace made of skulls. The difference, however, is that Maa Tara is calmer than Maa Kali. She was the one whose form Maa Kali took to revive Shiva when he drank the celestial venom, Kalakoota during Samudra Manthan. Besides being calmer, Maa Tara also has a pot belly which is hard to miss. In some Buddhist illustrations, however she is shown as sitting very calmly on a lotus bed with sharp features and a slender body. In the Sanatan images however, she holds a lotus in one hand, a skull cap which poses as a drinking bowl in the second, blood-drenched flaying knife and a Katari which almost look like scissors in the third and the fourth hands. Another striking difference is that Maa Tara wears a Tiger Skin Skirt.
Maa Tara however has a calmer look even in the fiercest of her forms, so if confused between Maa Kali and Maa Tara, notice their eyes.
How to Worship Her –
One of the most important things to remember before doing her Sadhana is that you pray to Akshobhya Rishi for balance before you commence the Sadhna. Maa Tara offers ultimate knowledge to the Sadhak and eventually helps them reach Nirvana.
The Mantras for Maa Tara are below –
ॐ ह्रीं स्त्रीम हूँ फट
Om Hreem Streem Hum Phatt
Meaning – Om Maya, the perfection of the feminine, cut the ego, purify!
ॐ तारावे विद्महे महा उग्रावे धीमहि
तन्नो तारा प्रचोदयात
Om Tarave Vidmahe Maha Ugrave Dhimahi

Meaning – Om, we meditate upon She who Illuminates of all Attitudes, contemplate She who is Fierce. May that Illuminator of all Attitudes grant us increase.
Before you start doing Sadhana of Maa Tara, make sure you are initiated by a Guru. It’s very important to have a Guru to guide and protect you when you are dealing with such fierce forces of energy and knowledge.
