Mushaka-the fascinating tale of how he became the vehicle of lord Ganesha

When the words “Lord Ganesha” echo in your mind, what instantly springs to life before your inner vision? An elephant head, a symbol of wisdom and intellect, and a mouse as His divine vehicle. Everyone knows the story about how Lord Ganesha got his elephant head, but very few have an idea about the story and symbolism behind His vehicle as a mouse.

In the pages of this blog, we shall unravel the lesser-known narrative of Ganesha’s vehicle, Mushaka, the mouse, and delve into the layers of significance it carries. Just as every element of the divine cosmos holds a purpose, what hidden meanings could lie within this seemingly unconventional choice? Let’s see…

The curse of a sage

Once upon a time, in the divine city of Amravati, a gathering of gods took place. The mighty ruler of the gods, Lord Indra, sat on his majestic throne. Among the attendees was King Kraunch, a Gandharva who were celestial beings known for their melodious music. King Kraunch had an important task that required his immediate attention. So, he sought permission from Lord Indra and began to hurry away.

However, in his rush, King Kraunch accidentally brushed his feet against the great sage Maharishi Vamdev, who was sitting nearby in deep meditation. This unintentional act was seen as disrespectful by Maharishi Vamdev, and he felt insulted. In his anger, the sage cursed King Kraunch, saying, “Oh heedless Gandharva! Your arrogance has blinded you to your own actions. You kicked me, a peaceful sage who was simply meditating. Go now, and you shall become a mouse. You will experience being kicked by various creatures for a long time.”

King Kraunch was overcome with fear and distress upon hearing this curse. He begged Maharishi Vamdev for forgiveness, tears streaming down his face. The sage’s heart softened at the sight of King Kraunch’s genuine remorse. He then added, “Though you will indeed become a mouse, do not despair. Lord Gajanana, also known as Lord Ganesha, will come to your rescue. Through his blessings, your suffering will be relieved. All your troubles will vanish under his grace.”

The Fall

Once turned into a massive mouse, he tumbled right into the hermitage of Maharishi Parashar. The transformed mouse was enormous, as big and fierce as a mountain. Its hair and nails resembled sharp swords and spears. Its teeth were razor-sharp and terrifying, and its voice was gruff and scary.

The moment it landed in the hermitage, the colossal mouse began to create chaos. It smashed clay pots and devoured all the grains stored inside them. It chewed up clothes, fabrics, and books. The hermitage’s once-beautiful garden was reduced to ruins, with flowers, fruits, and plants suffering extensive damage. The mouse’s behaviour spiralled out of control, and it even frightened away the sages who lived there.

This rampant destruction saddened Maharishi Parashar deeply. He pondered how to remove this troublesome mouse from his hermitage. If a solution wasn’t found, the mouse’s havoc would only increase. Killing it wasn’t an option either, as that would mean committing the wrong of ending a life.

Lord Gajanana

While Maharishi Parashar was deep in thought, pondering how to solve the problem caused by the massive mouse, a comforting sight appeared. Lord Gajanana, also known as Lord Ganesha, arrived in the hermitage, offering reassurance to the worried sage. As soon as the monstrous mouse spotted Lord Gajanana, it hurriedly started digging a hole, attempting to escape into the underworld.

In response, Lord Gajanana swiftly swung His radiant noose towards the mouse. This divine noose illuminated the entire sky with its brilliance. Its appearance was so fearsome that even the gods felt the urge to flee from their places. This extraordinary noose spun in ten different directions, reaching deep into the earth’s core. It entangled the mouse’s neck and pulled it out from its burrow. The grip of the noose left the mouse in a state of distress and unconsciousness.

When the mouse regained consciousness, it humbly pleaded with Lord Gajanana for forgiveness and begged for a boon. It wished to always be by Lord Gajanana’s side. Moved by the mouse’s sincerity, Lord Gajanana agreed and granted its request. He transformed the once-monstrous mouse into a more manageable size and made it His loyal vehicle. Lord Gajanana lightened His own weight, allowing the mouse, now called Mushaka, to easily carry Him wherever He desired.

And so, through kindness and understanding, Lord Gajanana not only tamed the fierce mouse but also turned it into a devoted companion on His divine adventures.

The Mushaka represents something important.

The mouse was once a powerful and destructive creature that caused havoc and chaos. However, with the grace and guidance of Lord Ganesha, it transformed from a menacing force into a loyal and devoted companion. This transformation signifies the divine power of Lord Ganesha to turn negativity into positivity, chaos into order, and arrogance into humility.

The mouse’s role as Lord Ganesha’s vehicle carries a profound message. Just as the mouse carries the weight of Lord Ganesha, who symbolises wisdom, knowledge, and obstacles’ removal, it represents our duty to bear the weight of our responsibilities and challenges with humility and dedication. The small size of the mouse compared to the great Lord Ganesha signifies that even the smallest efforts and beings have a significant role to play in our lives.

It symbolises the idea that even the smallest and humblest beings have a role to play in the world. Just as a mouse might be small, it still has its own unique abilities and qualities. It reminds us that we should never underestimate anyone, no matter how insignificant they may seem.

In a way, Ganesha riding the Mushaka teaches us about humility and respect for all forms of life, no matter their size or appearance. It’s a reminder that every living being is connected and has its own significance in the grand tapestry of existence.

So, when you see Lord Ganesha riding on the back of a mouse, remember the lesson it carries: forgiveness, the importance of recognizing the value in every living being, and the wisdom of humility and understanding in our journey of life. Ganpati Bappa Morya!!!
