Pitra Bali in Shraddha – Honoring Our Ancestors with Faith
In my previous article, we explored the significance of Shraddha Paksha. This sacred period is believed to be a time when our ancestors (Pitrs) became powerful as the gods themselves. During these days, descendants offer prayers and food to Brahmins on specific dates associated with their ancestors, inviting blessings and peace for their departed souls. However, many people face challenges in life, like business failures or personal struggles, often due to Pitra Dosh—a karmic imbalance caused by not honoring one’s ancestors.
Loss in Business and Other Life Struggles
One way to identify the presence of Pitra Dosh (ancestral karmic imbalance) is by observing continuous hardships in life, such as repeated losses in business, difficulties in having children, or domestic disturbances during auspicious events. These are considered signs that our ancestors are displeased. In Hindu belief, if we fail to honor or remember our ancestors during important life events, they may feel neglected and, in turn, may withhold their blessings.
For example, in marriage ceremonies, it is customary to offer prayers and respect to ancestors to ensure their blessings for a smooth and successful event. This acknowledgment helps prevent obstacles and ensures harmony. Performing Tarpan—a ritual offering water to ancestors during Shraddha Paksha—is one way to express devotion and respect, helping to remove ancestral dissatisfaction and bring peace to their souls.
In Hindu culture, showing disrespect to sacred animals like snakes, serpents, or cows, or neglecting one’s Kuldevi (family deity) or God, also contributes to Pitra Dosh. Additionally, ignoring the regular feeding of ancestors and Brahmins, particularly during Amavasya (new moon), can intensify this karmic burden. As long as these duties remain unfulfilled, the ancestral curse remains, obstructing progress and prosperity.
The Importance of Ancestral Rites
According to Hindu beliefs, living without a connection to one’s Dharma (religious duty) or disrespecting sacred beings like cows, serpents, or the family deity (Kuldevi), can intensify ancestral curses. It’s also important to honor ancestors regularly, especially during Amavasya (the new moon), by offering food to Brahmins. Neglecting these duties can perpetuate the ancestral curse, keeping it unresolved in your life.
The Modern Generation and Ancestral Customs
In today’s world, the younger generation often disregards these traditions, associating them with conservatism. Influenced by modern, foreign ideals, many find these rituals outdated. However, these beliefs are like the protective rakhi (a sacred thread tied during Raksha Bandhan), representing our deep connection to our cultural heritage. This red thread of belief and protection is woven into our lives from birth, binding us to our roots.
Why Shraddha Paksha Matters
As we inherit homes, wealth, and success built by the hard work of our ancestors, it is crucial to honor the spiritual customs they passed down to us. During Shraddha Paksha, some ancestors, who may not have attained moksha (liberation), might communicate with their descendants through dreams or signs, urging us to perform the necessary Shraddha rituals or Tarpan. This helps them continue on their spiritual journey towards salvation.
Symptoms of Pitra Shrap (Ancestral Curse)
Childlessness: Difficulty in having children, or having children with physical or mental challenges, can be signs of an ancestral curse.
Astrological Signs: According to Rishi Parashara, in astrology, the presence of Rahu (a malefic planet) in the fifth house of a person’s horoscope, or the influence of Saturn on the same house, can indicate Pitra Dosh. These planetary influences signify ancestral discontent.
In some cases, the curse of a Brahmin can also cause a lack of happiness related to children. Thus, it is essential to respect and honor Brahmins, as they hold a sacred position in the community.
The Role of Faith in Shraddha Paksha
If you face persistent obstacles despite working hard, it might be due to Pitra Dosh or Pitra Shraap (ancestral curse). In such cases, it is recommended to perform special prayers and Havana (fire rituals) with the guidance of experienced spiritual leaders. This helps remove the negative effects of the curse and brings blessings. During this period, even the gods cannot intervene until the ancestors are pacified. They, too, experience suffering until they are liberated, which is why Shraddha Paksha must be observed with deep faith and devotion.
Respecting Living Parents Along with Ancestors
While honoring ancestors during Shraddha is essential, it is equally important to respect and care for our living parents. They are our immediate protectors, and their blessings are invaluable. Disrespecting them can lead to new karmic burdens. Remember, our parents selflessly sacrifice for our happiness, and their contentment is key to avoiding further spiritual imbalances.
