The story of Satyavan and Savitri is a popular tale from Indian history. It is believed to have originated in the epic poem Mahabharata, but there are many different versions of the story.
Here is one version of the tale:
The Beginning
It begins with King Ashvapati’s 18 years of penance to the Goddess Savitri, who blesses him with a daughter named after herself. Savitri grows up to be a remarkable woman, so full of life and energy that no man dares to seek her hand in marriage. However, when she chooses the exiled prince Satyavan as her husband, she is informed by the sage divinity Narada that despite Satyavan’s many virtues, he is fated to die within a year.
The Empowered Choice
Savitri remained steadfast in her decision to marry him and disregarded her father’s pleas to choose another husband. With Narada’s agreement, Savitri’s father eventually gave in and the marriage proposal was happily accepted by Dyumatsena (exiled blind King, father of Satyavan) and Satyavan. Savitri’s love for Satyavan was pure and selfless, as she immediately embraced a simple and ascetic lifestyle after their wedding. Despite her inner turmoil over Satyavan’s fate, Savitri remained devoted to her husband and her new family.
The Day of Reckoning
Days passed. Three days before the fated Death of Satyavan, Savitri undertook a vow of fasting and remained standing day and night. Despite her father-in-law’s concerns that she had taken on too harsh a regimen, Savitri insisted that she had taken an oath to perform these austerities and received his support. On the day of her husband’s predicted demise, Savitri offered oblations to the Gods and Sages, fulfilling her vow. She accompanied Satyavan as he went to chop wood in the forest. After chopping some wood, Satyavan began to feel weak, and he took a break due to a sharp headache and sudden fever. While keeping his head on the lap of his wife, he surrendered to a deep sleep. And then, Savitri saw,

-Mahabharat
(In just a moment, she saw a divine man appear before her, whose body was adorned with a red-colored garment and a crown on his head. His body shone with a dark and bright radiance, and his eyes were red. He held a noose in his hand, and his form was awe-inspiring. He stood next to Satyavan and looked at him repeatedly.)
The Walk with Death
Within a moment, Savitri realized that this was no one but Yama, the Lord of Death. With his noose, he tied the soul of Satyavan, and started walking towards the heavens. Due to Savitri’s immense spiritual powers, she started following him while Lord Yama dragged the soul of her beloved husband. Surprised, Lord Yama saw that and told her to go back to the earth.
Savitri spoke, “Wherever my husband goes, whether he is taken away or goes by himself, I must go there too. This is the eternal Dharma. Through tapas (austerity), devotion to the guru, love for the husband, observance of vows, and your grace, my progress cannot be hindered anywhere. Learned scholars of philosophy say that by just walking seven steps together, friendship can be established. With that friendship in mind, I will make a request to you; please hear me out.”
Yamaraj said, “O blameless one, please go back. I am very pleased with your words, which are adorned with sounds, letters, consonants, and reasoning. Ask me for any boon except Satyavan’s life, and I can give you everything else.”
Savitri said, “Lord, my father-in-law is living in the forest after losing his kingdom. His eyesight is also lost. I want your grace for his eyes to be restored and for him to be as strong and radiant as fire and the Sun.”
Yamaraj said, “Unblemished one! I give you a boon. As you have said, it shall be so. I see that you are very tired from walking this path. Now return so that you may not suffer more exhaustion.”
Savitri replied, “How can I be tired when I am near my Lord? Wherever my husband resides, my destiny lies there as well. Wherever you take my Lord of life, that is where I will go. O Lord of the gods, please listen to me. Meeting with noble beings is highly desirable. Associating with them is even more beneficial. One’s company with holy men is never fruitless, so one should always stay near the good.”
Yamaraj replied, “Bhamini! What you have said is in everyone’s best interest, and it is agreeable to my mind and enhances the wisdom of the learner. Therefore, other than the boon of Satyavan’s life, ask for any other boon.”
Savitri said, “I ask that my wise father-in-law, who had his kingdom taken away from him, may regain it and that my revered guru Maharaja Dyumatsena never abandons his Dharma. This is the other boon I ask of you.”
Continuing the spiritual conversation, Yamraj said, “King Dyumatsen will soon and effortlessly regain his kingdom without abandoning his Dharma. Princess, your wish has been fulfilled by me. You may now return without fatigue.”
“Deveshwar, you are the son of the illustrious Sun, and hence wise men call you Vaivasvat. You lead all your subjects in accordance with Dharma, and hence you are called Dharmaraj. People trust saints more than they trust themselves. That is why everyone wants to love the saints. It is through harmony that all beings generate mutual trust for one another. Everyone has more trust in saints because of this harmony.”
Yamraj continued, “Kalyani, I have not heard anything like what you said from anyone else but you. Shubhe, I am very pleased with your words. You can ask for any fourth boon besides Satyavan’s life and return home.”
Savitri replied, “May there be one hundred sons, adorned with strength and valor, born of my union with Satyavan. This is the fourth boon I ask of you.”
Yamraj said, “Oh courageous one, you will soon have one hundred sons adorned with strength and valor who will increase your happiness. Princess, now you may return without fatigue.”
“You have granted me the boon of having a hundred sons, and now you are taking away my husband. Therefore, I ask for the boon that Satyavan be brought back to life so that your word may be true.” –Proclaimed Savitri.
Afterward, being pleased with the airtight argument, “So be it,” –said the son of the Sun God, Dharmaraj Yama. He released Satyavan from His bonds and, with a happy heart, said to Savitri, “Blessed one, take him; I have released your husband. By your virtuous and righteous words, O woman of noble virtue, you have pleased me completely. Satyavan will live a life free from illness and full of success and will be worthy of you. He will live for four hundred years by your side, and by performing sacrifices and living according to Dharma, he will become famous throughout the world.”
After Yamraj released Satyavan from His grip and left, Satyavan and Savitri returned to their father’s kingdom, where Satyavan regained his health and was able to live for another four hundred years, thanks to the boon given to Savitri by Yamraj.
Savitri’s unwavering devotion to her husband and her determination to save his life is considered a symbol of love and dedication. Her ability to outsmart even the Lord of Death, Yamraj, is seen as a testament to the power of human will and devotion.
The story of Satyavan and Savitri has been told and retold for centuries in many forms, and it continues to inspire people to this day. It is a story of love, devotion, courage, and the ultimate victory of good over evil.
