Spirituality
Science is knowledge, Spirituality is experience
The scientist, whose theory of relativity is world-famous and his thoughts are inspiring to every individual on Earth, had famously proclaimed that Spirituality and science are different sides of the same coin. His name is Albert Einstein. Along with discovering particle knowledge, Einstein was also busy understanding Adhyatma.
Until the 19th century, people were busy drawing lines between science and adhyatma. Then some said, adhyatma starts where science ends. Today we came to know that adhyatma and science are different paths leading towards the same destination, the “Truth”.
Today many scientists have realized that science has limits. The last year brought upon us a challenge of coronavirus. Today scientists and pharmaceutical companies are busy researching vaccines for the coronavirus. But it is not just corona but the unstable mind, psychiatric problems that are tagged along with it. That is why, many people started to look inward to find peace and stability. It has proven that both science and adhyatma go hand in hand.
Just like many people, Navjot was burdened with the lockdown and its regulation. A wanderer like her could never settle in one place for long. Though in a difficult mindset, she stumbled upon the path of adhyatma. She was able to find the solution for her problems.
Adhyatma is made of two words, “adhi” means above and “atma” means self. Adhyatma is knowledge about the highest self and highest soul. It is the spiritually most conscious, aware, and highest level of self. Vedas understood this as “Truth”. Even Mahatma Gandhi had his own quest for “Truth”
Quest for truth is seen in both science and adhyatma. One of the purposes of science to find the truth. Whether it is the truth about the origin of species, the truth about civilization, or existence of species. It is a more outward look and experiment with the available facts and resources in the material world. Science follows its rules, methods, and new ways to search for the truth.
But for adhyatma, search for truth is a search within. In explaining Vedanta philosophy, Swami Vivekananda said that try to understand yourself from within. Knowing oneself fully is really knowing the truth about the self. Once you are familiar with the knowledge of self, you are familiar with the cosmos. In his live interaction with students, Chamunda Swamiji asked students to search for the truth about ourselves. It requires patience and self awareness.
We are often satisfied with outside medicine. Science asks us to have good food habits. A vegetarian diet is today’s currency for a healthy life. But the food we eat is raw material. Our body is a machine and we must also focus on the inner parts. The stronger the core, the better will be the functioning.
So adhyatma always asks to find the cure from inside. Swamiji often talks about the importance of muladhar chakra and its benefits. If we could activate muladhar chakra, then our food habits, the sleeping routine could be cured. Subtle energy will be activated which could be used to cure the disorders of the intestine, bad stomach. Adhyatma is the inner cure to external problems.
So both science and adhyatma are trying to give the same message that doesn’t ignore the body. Science and adhyatma are different means but the goal is the same. A person should use both means if possible. It depends on what perspective we are using.
Both science and adhyatma are trying to convince the same thing that we should keep taping in your energies. Whether it’s around you or within you.
A famous story of cavemen is that millions of years ago they invented fire. Fire is useful in industry, houses, and in more places. The utility of fire is huge. But it could also be the cause of destruction. It can shed the light on the dark path or can cause destruction if in the wrong hands.
Adhyatma tries to explain the same thing. There is a fire within us. We can control the energy and fire within us by certain ways like chakra activation, meditation, and sadhana practice. Upanishad tries to explain that there are five elements, called Panchamahabhuta, within us and one of the fires. Those people with a burning fire inside, often light the path for others. But the uncontrolled fire can cause a destruction
Practice adhyatma in a scientific way:
– Practice kindness in your daily routine. It can rewire our thoughts and your behaviour with others will start to be humble and full of compassion.
– Inculcate authenticity and integrity in action because it will help in understanding the true nature of things.
– Try connecting more with nature so that your inner energies don’t go dormant.
– Meditate so that you can radiate more positivity. Find a peaceful place, close your eyes and start imaging a positive future. These simple daily routine changes can help your ‘atma’ to transcend to a higher level. It may require disciplined and rational choices in day to day life.
