“एकदन्तावतारोवै देहिनां ब्रह्मधारकः । मदासुरस्य हन्ता स आखुवाहनगः स्मृतः ॥”

Ekdantavatarovai Dehinan Brahmadharka: . Madasurasya hanta sa akhuvahangah smritah ॥

‘Ekdant’ (the one with only one tusk or tooth) is the cognizant incarnation of Brahmam (Ultimate reality), the one who is a destroyer of Madasura. He rides the mighty mouse.

As said in the above mantra, the story of Lord Ganesha’s incarnation is truly fascinating, and it all begins with an intriguing incident. Let’s take a deep dive into this ancient tale, as told in the ancient text of Ganesh Puran. It’s a journey into the mystical world of Sanatana Dharma, where gods and cosmic forces come to life, weaving a captivating narrative that will transport you to a realm where the divine and the mortal collide.

The Birth and Penance of Madasura

Once upon a time, there was a demon named Mad (meaning Pride) who was born from the ignorance of Maharishi Chyavan. Mad humbly approached his father, Maharishi Chyavan, and asked, “Dear Lord, where should I live and what should I do?” Maharishi replied, “My child, you should go to Patal Lok and seek the guidance of Shukracharya, a wise teacher of demons. He will take care of you.”

Following his father’s advice, Mad went to Patal Lok and began his deep meditation with a powerful mantra, ‘Hreem,’ belonging to the Divine Mother Bhagwati. With unwavering devotion, he meditated for thousands of years, enduring hunger and thirst. His penance was so intense that his body became only skin and bones.

Impressed by his sincere dedication, Maa Bhagwati appeared before Mad and granted him a divine boon. She said, “My dear child, you shall rule over the universe with stability and without interruptions. You will be free from diseases, and your wishes will be fulfilled in due time.”

The Demonic Rule

After receiving the divine boon, the goddess disappeared, and Madasura returned to his place with a joyful heart. He conquered a city and turned it into a luxurious kingdom. He married a beautiful girl named ‘Lalsa’ (greed), who belonged to Pramdasur. They had three sons named Vilasi (lover of luxury), Lolup (greedy), and Dhanaprya (obsessed with wealth).

With newfound power, he began expanding his kingdom and engaged in battles with other kings. His strength, fueled by the boon from Maa Bhagwati, made him invincible. The gods faced defeat, and even Indra had to flee his kingdom. Madasura gained control over earth and heaven with his demonic influence. The entire universe was thrown into chaos.

Sanat Kumaras and Beej Mantra ‘Gang’

The gods, who had fled from their homes because of the troubles caused by Madasura, found themselves lost in the forests and mountains. They were in great distress and didn’t know how to overcome this calamity. One day, they came to the dwelling of Sage Sanatkumaras.

Sage Sanatkumaras advised them, “Dear gods, if you worship Lord Ekdanta with devotion, your wishes will surely be fulfilled. He is the most compassionate and all-powerful God.”

The sage further explained, “Lord Ekadanta is the God of gods, holding ultimate authority over this universe. His sacred mantra is ‘Gam,’ which you should chant. The word ‘Eka’ (meaning ‘one’) represents the illusion or ignorance, and Lord Ekadanta is known for dispelling all illusions of Maya.”

Appearance of Lord Ekadanta

Following the advice of the wise sages, the deities went to a quiet forest area and began worshiping Lord Ekadanta. For a hundred divine years, they devoted themselves to intense penance, enduring hunger and thirst until their bodies became like skeletons. Witnessing their unwavering dedication and austerities, Lord Ekadanta was immensely delighted and manifested Himself before them.

That adorable form of Ganesha has one tusk, four arms, a mouth as big as an elephant. He is ever full of wisdom and a rider on a mouse. He has Sheshnag (celestial serpent) on his navel, and he will be holding a noose, Parashu (an ax), and a beautiful lotus in his hands with fourth in an Abhaya Mudra gesture. He is grateful. His face always blooms with happiness. He is the one who always gives boons to the devotees and destroys the illusion of non-devotees.

Upon seeing Lord Ekdanta, all the gods humbly bowed down with deep devotion and praised Him in various ways, saying, “Oh, Lord! Madasura’s cruelty knows no bounds. He has taken away the sacred places of the gods and deprived the sages of their rituals. His merciless actions have caused suffering to all living beings. Please remove these obstacles.”

To their plea, Lord Ekdanta assured, “Your words shall come true. You can be certain of it.” Overjoyed by His response, the gods bowed again and gathered in a safe place. Meanwhile, Lord Ekdanta fearlessly challenges the demon Madasura to face Him in battle.

Pride of Madasura

Filled with rage, Madasura commanded his army to attack and confront Lord Ekdanta, saying, “You, giant animal! You have no idea of my might! I’ll destroy you now. Witness my power, O elephant-like creature!”

He aimed a sharp arrow at Lord Ekdanta, but before he could release it, the arrow was drawn towards the Lord and fell at His feet. Surprisingly, when Madasura tried with another arrow, a sharp ax suddenly struck his chest, causing him to fall unconscious, bleeding profusely.

Upon regaining consciousness, Madasura tried to remove the ax, but it flew back into Lord Ekdanta’s hands. This bewildered him, and he began to realize the extraordinary power before him. He pondered, “Could this Ekadanta be the Supreme Lord, the Almighty Supreme Brahman? It must be so, for such power can only belong to the Supreme Soul.”

With this realization, Madasura humbly surrendered to Lord Ekadanta and praised Him with folded hands, seeking forgiveness for his sins. Lord Ekdanta reassured him, saying, “Anyone who calls upon me with sincere devotion will receive my grace. Return to the underworld and rule there, but do not disturb places where my worship is performed.”

Following the Lord’s command, Madasura left the holy places and returned to the underworld. The deities regained their abode, and the sages fearlessly resumed their rituals and penance. With Lord Ekadanta’s blessings, harmony was restored, and peace prevailed once again.

What can we learn from this story?

Madasura (pride), his wife Lalasa (greed), and their three sons Vilasi (one who loves luxury), Lolup (greed), and Dhanaprya (one who is obsessed with wealth) have very close relationships with each other. Pride and greed give birth to laziness, the obsession with wealth, and unnatural greed. And by praying to Lord Ekadanta, one can get rid of these evil emotions from within, just like how Lord Ekadanta defeated them in the war.

The story emphasizes the importance of conquering negative emotions like pride, greed, and obsession with wealth. These emotions can lead to suffering and create obstacles on our spiritual journey. By seeking divine help and practicing self-awareness, we can work towards eliminating these harmful traits from within.

Additionally, the story highlights that divine grace and forgiveness of Lord Ekadanta are accessible to all who sincerely seek it. No matter how deep-rooted our negative tendencies are, the divine Ekadanta is always ready to offer forgiveness and show us the right path.
