Special Worship and Important Rituals on Dhanteras: A Guide to Spiritual Prosperity

Dhanteras, celebrated on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, falls two to three days before Diwali and marks the beginning of the grand five-day Diwali festival. On this day, special worship is performed to invoke blessings for prosperity, health, and protection. Let’s explore the rituals, their spiritual significance, and what they bring to our lives.

The Spiritual Start to Diwali: Worshiping Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganpati, and Kuber

Starting from Dhanteras to Diwali, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi (the deity of wealth and prosperity), Lord Ganpati (remover of obstacles), and Lord Kuber (guardian of wealth) to invite prosperity and continued growth. While Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganpati are honored on multiple days, Lord Kuber is specially worshiped on Dhanteras. This three-day worship signifies the alignment of prosperity, wisdom, and fortune.

Dhanwantri Jayanti: Celebrating the Founder of Ayurveda

Dhanwantri Jayanti, celebrated on Dhanteras, honors Lord Dhanwantri, who appeared with the “Amrit Kalash” (nectar of immortality) during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). Lord Dhanwantri is revered as the father of Ayurveda, and his blessings bring health and well-being.

On this auspicious day, devotees take a special holy bath. The water urn or kalash kept in the home temple on Ahoi Ashtami is used for this purpose, and bathing with this water on Dhanteras is believed to bestow health and beauty.

Yam Deep Daan: The Lighting of Lamps for Protection and Peace

Dhanteras is also marked by Yamdeep Daan, the offering of oil lamps to Lord Yama, the deity of death and justice. This ritual is done to protect family members from any misfortunes. Lighting a hundred-wick lamp in temples during the auspicious night, wards off negativity.

According to Vastu Shastra (ancient Indian architecture principles), Lord Yama is associated with the south direction. It is recommended to light lamps at both sides of the main door and in areas like the bathroom to cleanse spaces of negative energies.

Buying Salt and Other Rituals on Dhanteras

On Dhanteras, it is auspicious to purchase items such as salt, symbolizing purification and the removal of negativity. Salt is later used during Diwali for cleansing rituals to purify the energy in the house.

Special Offerings and Prasad Preparation: A special prasad made from coriander (dhania) and khoya (a sweetened milk product) is prepared and offered to Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali. Coriander is considered a blessing of prosperity; hence, some of it is kept in a safe, as a symbol of welcoming Lakshmi’s grace into the home.

Cleaning and Welcoming Goddess Lakshmi: Rituals for Spiritual Cleanliness

In preparation for Diwali, every household is cleaned meticulously to welcome the Goddess of prosperity. Dhanteras is the day to bring a new broom, which symbolizes sweeping out negative energy. This broom should be brought in pairs, as odd numbers signify balance in traditional rituals. To honor the broom’s role in our life, it is marked with kumkum (vermillion powder symbolizing purity).

An old broom, representing old energies, should be wrapped with a black thread and discarded on a Saturday, Amavasya (new moon day), or during an eclipse to usher in new, positive energy.

For career growth, it’s also beneficial to keep this plant on the office desk or in the southwest corner of the home.

The energies of special constellations and planetary alignments on Dhanteras amplify the results of all rituals performed on this day. Observing these traditions with devotion allows devotees to harness this energy for auspicious outcomes.
