Spirituality During a Crisis
We wear a mask. We avoid crowds and stay home. We wash our hands every hour, and we check our oxygen levels a couple of times a day. During these unprecedented times of a pandemic, everyone takes precautions as much as possible not to be infected with the COVID. Science is helping us get through this crisis, and so does spirituality. In this blog, we are taking a closer look at how spirituality plays a significant role in supporting us emotionally during a crisis.
Meditation: Meditation brings you to the present. It helps us forget about regretful past and worries of the future. Just by concentrating on the breath, one can focus on the present without any judgment and connect with the inner self.
The people are stranded in homes, but even the COVID warriors practice meditation these days to relieve themselves from the stress and anxiety while fighting on the frontline. In addition, they feel recovered from the excessive burnout from the job hours they are putting on to save lives.
Thankfulness: Spirituality teaches you to be thankful. It teaches you to be appreciative of the people, resources, things that you currently have with you. But, going one step further, spirituality teaches you not just to be thankful, but it makes you express gratitude.
Gratitude makes us act on the feeling of thankfulness. It creates a sense of abundance instead of deprivation. By aligning our perception to reality, spirituality makes us cherish what we have instead of what we want. Known to improve physical health, gratitude is known to enhance empathy, self-esteem, and mental strength.
Before hitting the bed, count the things you are grateful for in life. Or, write them down in your gratitude journal. This will help you to be more optimistic and to look on the positive side during the crisis.
Self-acceptance: Spirituality is all about knowing yourself. Looking inwards to seek the answers to the life questions. Spirituality tells you that it’s okay to fail during a crisis. Every crisis is an opportunity to improve yourself by learning from failures.
The spiritual self is the most authentic, unaltered, honest version of yourself. Self-acceptance plays a significant role during a crisis when you are very well aware of your strengths and weaknesses. With spirituality, instead of seeking approval from the outside world, when you accept what you are, you reach your untapped potential to cope up with the difficult time.
Learn to give a break to yourself, from constant self-judging and over criticism. Instead of labeling things failure, take them as a lesson, or a learning curve, for self-encouragement. Being optimistic, confident, productive, and happier during a crisis will help you get over it more quickly. While writing down a journal, write down all the mistakes you made during the day and all the good things you did on that day, however small. This will make you realize that you are more than just features.
Detachment: Do you know why lotus is so auspicious in spirituality? It is a symbol of separation. Even though it’s stem is attached to the mud, the flower will be pointing at the sky, glowing with color. Just like that, spirituality teaches you to think about the solution instead of the problem, diverting all the focus to get out of the crisis.
Excessive attachment to a person, possession or a thing is considered a root of disturbance in spirituality. Spirituality teaches the necessary detachment you need to think about the problem from a distance, without involving emotions. The detached seeker can weigh the consequences of their actions under pressure, making better decisions every time.
We know that there might be some celestial power, a divinity, or a God looking after you is the most incredible power that faith brings to you. Even though we are responsible for the hardships we face, faith gives us the unbelievable ability to cope with the pressure or overwhelming life.
Positivity: Journaling, prayers, meditation, or even yoga are known to nourish the soul and grat the much-needed time for self-reflection. As mind and body are intricately connected, spirituality helps create a healthy positive self-image and positive reinforcement.
“I have lived my life to the fullest satisfaction.” Saying this, an 85-year-old COVID patient named Dabhadkar gave up his bed to a 40-year-old younger patient and went home. Three days later, COVID took the life of this great man. While every news channel was busy displaying the daily deaths due to COVID, no one covered this positive, brave story of someone’s grandfather. Like the positive news, spirituality always paints the positive picture, giving you the mental power to fight the crisis.
Mindfulness, five-minute meditation, mantra chanting for 11 times, or may it be as simple as lighting a lamp in front of your divine make you a more thankful, strong, compassionate, and brave individual to cope with the crisis. It provides a shield of sturdiness and confidence subconscious, making you stand tall in front of the disaster.
Spirituality provides mental relaxation, strength to cope with adversity in a better manner, contribution to overall well being. In addition, it provides a more holistic approach, combining mind, body, and soul, focussing all three on the crisis.
