Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam

Was the Bhagavat Gita told only for Arjuna? Probably not. Though Arjuna was a reason, it enlightened all with the wisdom the almighty had. Lord Krishna wanted to spread the message to every human being on this planet. The phrase Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam exactly reflects the same meaning. In our actions, we must not think only about ‘I’, but about every human being. And so the entire world becomes our family. 

One world, one family

It calls us to transcend from ‘I’ to ‘us’. We should think like ‘The world is my family’. The world is like a small, correctly knit nuclear family system with everyone being equal. All humanity is one family. 

The scriptures have a comprehensive meaning of this phrase

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is made up of 3 Sanskrit words: 

‘Vasudha’ means the ‘Earth’

‘Eva’ means like or emphasizing

‘Kutumbakam’ means large extended family.

It has been derived from the Mahaupanishada and also finds mention in many other scriptures and literacy works of Indian culture.

It is a duty beyond ‘I’

It suggests a duty to the person who has attained the highest level of spiritual progress. It is, hence, becomes the duty of a citizen of this world to perform the duties towards the betterment of this world. In his message, Chamunda Swamiji asked people to practice brotherhood and sisterhood towards each other so that our Heart Chakra opens up more. He asks us to contribute more to the betterment of the world, irrespective of the material positions. 

Celebration of motherhood in World Family

The word mother is dearer to our heart. Mother plays an important role in the life of society, family, and life of an individual. Every child has affection towards the mother. 

Hinduism says, जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी; (“Janani Janmabhumishcha Swargadapi Gariyasi”) meaning the mother and the motherlands are superior to the heavens.

Without a mother, there is no creation. So the mother is important for the entire mankind. Every culture and religion of the world gives special importance to mothers. The phrase Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam asks us to pay respect for the mother earth.

Respect for women is one of the central ideas of the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. 

In India there are so many rivers called Ganga, Brahmaputra, Sarasvati are named after women. Purana mentions that where women are worshipped, gods are pleased; but where they are not honored, no sacred right yields reward.

In Rigveda, women have been given equal status as men. In the Rigvedic family, the matriarch occupied the central place, and many warriors were named after their mothers. 

In the Vedic age, there were many Rishika meaning women sages. These women were the fountainhead of wisdom. Their contribution was not limited to the Indian tradition but is open for the world family.

Prophet Mohammed said, ‘Paradise lies at the feet of our mother.’

In today’s 21st century, we must practice gender equality seen during the Vedic age. Girls have given an education at an early age. This is an inspiration to the many Asian, American, and African cultures who are struggling with the gender discrimination problem.

The family model told in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam can overcome social evil

The family of the world should be based on respect, sacrifice, and togetherness. The very family life gives you happiness. It also gives you solace. Peace is a prerequisite for personal development. And family is the place where peace is achieved.

So, for a world to be one family, we must cultivate peace, truth, togetherness among every human being. We can stand out many problems by following the meaning embodied in the phrase. Also, we can easily pass the taste of times.

Share and care is the core philosophy behind the phrase

It is one of the principal ideas of Indian philosophy. The entire universe is one. And so what is mine is also yours. This one is not made up of narrow-minded conduct. For those with a noble mindset, the entire world is one family. In this way, we complete each other. 

Everybody must be happy and live in harmony

This is the basic philosophy behind the message of this phrase. Indian civilization is 5000 years old and it has been promoting the same message. That is why the Indian culture, though very old, is still shining, evolving, and blossoming.  

Embrace the diversity

Diversity of culture and tradition is our pride. Respecting and celebrating cultures is the beauty of diversity. This is what means by respecting humanity and being human. Chamunda Swamiji asks his students to follow the path of compassion, love, harmony so that diversity is nurtured and respect for humanity is cultivated more.

Let’s open our Heart Chakra more. It will open our arms to embrace and heal others. Love for all and a sense of brotherhood makes us understand the pains and pleasures of others. It creates a sense of awareness. We share our concerns with everyone.

In Tantra tradition, meditation, mantra practice, and yantra worship symbolizes the sense of world care. The science of aura, gratitude, body vibrations is aimed at world betterment. It places ‘we’ before ‘I’.

We all emanate from one supreme source to merge back to the same source.
