What Is Bhai Dooj and How Can We Celebrate It?

On this auspicious day, sisters shower their brothers with love and blessings by applying a traditional ’tilak’ on their foreheads, followed by mouth watering sweets to delight their taste buds. Brothers, in return, pamper their sisters with thoughtful gifts and lovingly offer them tokens of appreciation and protection. The heartfelt exchange of love and presents exemplifies the essence of Bhai Dooj.

When did the great tradition of Bhai Dooj Begin?

The folklore goes like this: Long ago, there was a wicked demon named Narkasura, whose malevolence knew no bounds, wreaking havoc upon the lands. His celestial boons, granted by Lord Brahma Himself, made him invincible to the gods’ attempts to defeat him. To make matters worse, Narkasura captured 16,000 innocent young girls, planning to force them into marriage against their will. The world was shrouded in darkness as the nefarious demon’s tyranny prevailed.

However, hope was on the horizon, for Lord Krishna, the divine protector, took it upon himself to confront this evil incarnate. In a heroic battle, Krishna emerged victorious, vanquishing Narkasura and liberating the captive girls, bestowing upon them the precious gift of freedom.

In the aftermath of this great triumph, Lord Krishna set forth to meet his dear sister, Subhadra, filled with love and gratitude for her unwavering support. As he arrived at her abode, Subhadra welcomed him with a heartwarming embrace, sweet treats, and fragrant flowers, celebrating the freedom of those 16,000 young girls from the clutches of darkness.

With profound reverence, she adorned Krishna’s forehead with a ceremonial tilak, a mark of victory and protection. It is said that this sacred moment of sibling love and the celebration of triumph over evil became the origin of the cherished festival of “Bhai Dooj.”

The Rituals of Bhai Dooj

Prepare the Puja Thali: The Puja Thali holds significant importance on the auspicious occasion of Bhai Dooj. Decorate the plate with Roli (Vermillion), Rice, Mauli (cotton) thread, Fruits, Chandan (sandalwood paste), flowers, sweets, and betel nut. This beautiful plate will be used to perform the Aarti of your beloved brother.

Create a Rice Flour Seat: According to Hindu traditions, fashion a square seat decorated with the rangoli of rice flour for your brother to sit on during the Tilak ceremony. This seat symbolizes the sacred space where the auspicious ritual takes place.

Dress in New Attire: Both brothers and sisters wear new clothes as a symbol of purity and renewal. Brothers can cover their heads with a traditional hat or a fresh handkerchief.

Light the Lamp: Illuminate a lamp facing the south direction, invoking the divine presence and blessings on this sacred occasion.

Seat the Brother: After praying to the gods, brothers sit on the designated seat marked with a rangoli made from rice flour, ready to receive the Tilak ceremony.

Embrace the Mauli Thread: The Mauli Thread holds deep spiritual significance, known for its protective powers in Hindu customs. Tie this sacred thread on your brother’s wrist, much like a Rakhi, to safeguard him from negativity and draw positive energies.

Sister’s Offering: Sisters lovingly present Jaggery, betel leaf, black grams, betel nut, and fruits to their brothers before performing the Aarti. In some parts of India, even a coconut is offered by the sister to their brothers as well. 

Perform Aarti and Tilak Ceremony: Using the Puja Thali and a lit diya, sisters perform Aarti and Puja for their brothers. Sisters apply Tilak on their brother’s foreheads with rice, Vermillion, and sandalwood paste, imparting blessings and protection.

Exchange Blessings and Gifts: After the Aarti and Tilak ceremony, brothers shower their sisters with special Bhai Dooj gifts as tokens of love and gratitude. And both of them seek blessings from the elders of the house  to complete the joyous celebration. In the spiritual community, many seekers who learn under one Guru tie sacred Mauli thread on each other as a symbol of love and respect for each other.

Indeed, the beautiful customs and rituals of the Bhai Dooj ceremony may vary from place to place and evolve through different traditions. Each region and community may add its unique touch, but at the core, the essence remains unwavering – the celebration of the sacred bond between brothers and sisters.

They symbolize our prayers for the well-being and protection of our brothers, just as our sisters lovingly apply the Tilak on our foreheads.
