What is Chakra Balancing, and How Does It Work?
We regularly go out for a jog, hit the gym, or visit yoga studios, to take care of our bodies. We control our diet as per our fitness goals. We go to a great extent to take care of the physical body. But we often tend to forget about our mind and our spiritual body in this process, which is a crucial part of our existence in this universe. As our body needs healing, our mind and spirit also need healing. In this blog, we will be getting to know a few things about energy centres (Chakras), why they need to be balanced, and how exactly does it work?
What is a Chakra?
Each and everything in this universe is governed by energy. The human body is no exception for that. Chakra is a Sanskrit term, meaning ‘a wheel’. Ancient Yogis have identified different Energy Centres in our body in the form of spinning disks, called Chakras. These Chakras are nothing but the conglomerates of nerve bundles coming together on the spinal cord, which is believed to be 114 in number, and 7 being the main ones.
However, the exact number of total Chakras are debatable as some people say it’s 7, others say it’s 9, some say they are 12, some 114 and some others say it’s 1014. However, the numbers also vary when speaking in relation to the mind, body, soul and energy, emotional and spiritual realms.
Why Do They Need to be Balanced?
Starting from the base, the seven Chakras are named Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and the Crown Chakra. Each Chakra has its properties, and they are in charge of different functionalities in our physical, mental and energy bodies. And hence, to keep these bodies functioning at their best, balancing the Chakras is important.
What happens when the Chakras in the body are imbalanced?
There are several emotional and physical side effects of Chakra blockage or imbalance. So let’s take a look at the effects of balance and imbalance of these Chakras one by one.
Being called the base Chakra, Root Chakra blockage creates several physical issues in the legs, tailbone, reproductive glands, and prostate glands. Imbalance in the Root Chakra brings out emotional issues related to basic survival, like food, shelter, and money. Being located two inches below our naval area, Sacral Chakra imbalance is related to the issues concerning the urinary tract, reproductive organs, pelvic and lower back. Stagnant Sacral Chakra creates issues in relationships, hampers creativity and passion.
Solar Plexus imbalance invites troubles like digestive issues, thyroid issues, high blood pressure, etc. A person with imbalanced Solar Plexus will have some serious self-esteem issues, and they will be in constant fear of rejection and criticism. Physical side effects of Heart Chakra blockage include cardiovascular diseases, upper back, and shoulder issues. Imbalance also causes emotional problems like jealousy, anger, abandonment, resentment, and fear of loneliness.
Located at the center of your throat, this Chakra can invite issues related to speech, thyroid, and facial problems. The emotional side effects of the Chakra blockage include problems in expressing yourself and a lack of willpower. Located right in between our eyebrows, this Chakra causes problems related to sinus, eyesight, hearing, and hormonal imbalance. This causes mood swings, volatility, and issues in self-realization. Crown Chakra imbalance has serious repercussions such as severe depression and oversensitivity towards light, sound, and smell. An individual with the blocked Crown Chakra will experience an unwillingness to learn new things, ideas, or knowledge.
How to do Chakra Balancing?
Meditation:
Meditation is considered the best way to clear the Chakra blockage and bring balance. Incorporating a daily practice makes a substantial improvement in meditation, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
While meditating, when a seeker concentrates on an individual chakra at a time, one can create a balance in the entire parasympathetic nervous system. As the seeker gets used to the Chakra meditation through practice, he can sense the Chakra imbalance by himself, and by concentrating on that particular Chakra, he can balance it.
Visualization:
Visualization is an important part of the process when it comes to Chakra meditation. Having an Ishta deva helps in this process. Each Chakra has its color, and each Chakra has its deity. Each deity has its own Beej (seed) mantra, which helps in Chakra activation. Visualizing the Chakras being cleansed and rotating at their speed is a crucial part of the chakra balancing process.
Mantra Chanting:
Sounds possess enormous transformative powers. When the seeker chants the specific Beej mantra, the sound creates the energy flow, balancing the Chakras. Vibrations from the mantras clear blockages from our energy centers, normalizing the energy flow.
Each chakra has a specific Beej Mantra, when paired with meditation and deep breathing, gets connected with the specific element. When you concentrate on the specific chakra, while chanting the specific Beej mantra, it creates a harmony in between your energy and the universal energy, striking a perfect balance in that specific chakra. Below, you will find chakra, Beej mantras to chant and actions related to it.
Chakra | Chakra Name | Beej Mantra Chant | Action |
Muladhara | Root chakra | Lam | I am |
Svadhisthana | Sacral chakra | Vam | I feel |
Manipura | Solar Plexus chakra | Ram | I do |
Anahata | Heart chakra | Yam | I love |
Vishuddha | Throat chakra | Ham | I speak |
Adnya | Third eye chakra | Aum | I see |
Sahasrara | Crown chakra | Aum | I know |
Food:
Diet and lifestyle play a significant role in Chakra balancing. When you have identified which of your Chakra has been blocked, one can incorporate a diet specific to that Chakra. For example, strawberries, tomatoes, or raspberries help balance the Root Chakra, while Lemon balm, leafy vegetables, or green apple aid in removing the blockage of the Heart Chakra. Likewise, chamomile, bananas, and lemons help in Solar Plexus Chakra balancing, and thyme, eggplant, or red grapes help activate the Crown Chakra.
Colors:
Crystal meditation, guided meditation, sound healing are few types of meditation and help in Chakra activation. Our energy centers have specific colors, and when we wear those colors, it matches with the frequency of the colors of those Chakras. So even incorporating the foods with those colors can help to a great extent for clearing out the Chakra blockages.
Reiki:
When we know about the specific Chakra blockage, Chakra healing reiki, concentrating on that particular spot promotes the balancing. For overall well-being and happiness, one can undergo reiki therapy just to improve the overall balance. As you continue with the reiki treatment, with experience, you can sense the blockages in your Chakras by yourself.
Positive Affirmations:
Words and thoughts have undeniable energy hidden in them. Positive Chakra affirmations help in achieving personal goals and perceiving blockages. While meditating, you can practice these affirmations:
-I feel my Root Chakra is unblocking and inviting positive change within me.
-My Sacral Chakra is healing, and I am creating.
-Every day, as I am meditating, my Solar Plexus Chakra is growing brighter and brighter.
-I am meditating to unblock my Heart Chakra and move on from my pain.
-My Throat Chakra is being balanced, and my words, thoughts, and goals are becoming more apparent.
-As I meditate to unblock my Third Eye Chakra, my vision and intuitions are being cleansed.
-I am being filled with greatness, as my Crown Chakra is being balanced.
What happens when the Chakras are balanced?
When the Chakras are balanced, it creates a perfect flow of energy, creating an incredible harmony between mind, body, and soul. However, one must understand that balancing all the Chakras is not the goal of spirituality. Instead, it indicates self-realization and mastery over the senses.
-When the Root Chakra is balanced, it creates emotional support, a sense of connection, and attachment to the physical world.
-When the Sacral Chakra is well balanced, it creates a sense of commitment, creativity, and passion.
-When the Solar Plexus Chakra is balanced, it creates the perfect balance of self-respect and self-compassion within a seeker.
-When the Heart Chakra opens up, it creates boundless joy, creativity, compassion, and forgiveness within an individual.
-When the Throat Chakra opens up completely, it creates mastery over the communication. One can experience an interrupted flow of words, emotions, and expressions, and a seeker speaks about the truth and nothing else.
-The Third Eye Chakra is considered the most crucial Chakra when it comes to spirituality. It clears the clouds of fear, resentments, confusion, illusions within a seeker.
-When the Crown Chakra is balanced, the seeker begins to live in the present moment, with tremendous peace and calming feeling taking over his subconscious.
